During the XBOX Games Showcase 2026, Undead Labs unveiled the first gameplay for ‘State of Decay 3’. The trailer provided an exciting glimpse into the next installment of the survival game, highlighting features such as open-world exploration, cooperative play, settlement building, and enhanced combat systems. The game is set for release in 2027 and is currently available for wishlisting.

The showcased footage reveals a shared world survival experience where players not only strive to survive but also collaborate to build communities. Players can construct settlements, manage survivors, gather resources, and fend off increasing zombie threats. The game supports solo play or cooperative gameplay with up to four players in a shared world sandbox.

Creative Director Kevin Patzelt emphasized the team’s commitment to preserving the essence of the series while expanding its scope. He stated that the aim is to provide both long-time fans and newcomers with a richer and more flexible experience than ever before.

One of the primary inquiries from fans revolved around the gameplay footage itself. Patzelt confirmed that everything displayed in the trailer is authentic in-game footage.

He remarked, “Everything shown in the trailer is from the game. We did not use CGI. We have some fun camera angles in there, but it is 100% game capture.”

Additionally, he mentioned that the team is utilizing Unreal Engine 5 to elevate visuals and combat detail beyond anything the studio has achieved previously. The trailer features both close combat action and showcases new systems like evolving enemy zones and settlement areas.

A significant new element in ‘State of Decay 3’ is the introduction of Plague Nests. These are described as evolving enemy hubs that function as living threats within the game world. They can spread, react to player actions, and alter the world’s development over time.

Patzelt explained, “Plague Nests are dynamic sources of enemy encounters. We spent a lot of time thinking through how they react to what players do.”

He added that no two playthroughs will feel identical, as these systems can change their behavior and growth patterns each time. Some nests may rapidly spread across the map, while others become stronger and more defensive, necessitating different strategies.

Combat has also been reimagined for the new game. One of the most significant changes is the introduction of more attack options for players. Instead of a single basic melee attack like in ‘State of Decay 2’, players now have quick attacks and heavy attacks, along with dodging and more responsive movement.

Patzelt noted, “There’s a lot of fun combat moments with an extra melee attack. You can create fight circles in a sandbox system.”

Zombie behavior has seen improvements as well. Different types of infected now exhibit distinct behaviors. Some are slow and weak, while others are faster or armored, and all react differently based on noise, movement, and combat situations.

The game world is also significantly larger. The playable map in ‘State of Decay 3’ is approximately four times bigger than a single map from ‘State of Decay 2’. Players can explore it freely from the outset without restrictions.

Multiplayer is a key focus this time around. The game supports shared world co-op, allowing players to stay together or split up while still influencing the same world. This means one player can concentrate on building a base while another explores or eliminates threats.

Patzelt mentioned, “We’ve seen players build up a single settlement together, or split off and do their own thing while still contributing to shared goals.”

Players can even manage multiple settlements simultaneously. Actions in one part of the world can impact progress elsewhere, creating a network of survivor communities working in unison.

The world also features AI groups known as Enclaves. These are NPC factions with their own objectives and personalities. Players can ally with them, trade, or recruit them into their communities.

Another significant system introduced in the trailer is resource scavenging. Looting remains a core survival mechanic, but now risk and reward play a more prominent role. Dangerous areas like Plague Nests offer better rewards but are much more challenging to survive.

Weapon crafting is also receiving a substantial upgrade. The game introduces a “maker culture” system where weapons can be modified and rebuilt in innovative ways. Standard tools like machetes or clubs are often damaged or improvised.

Patzelt explained, “What are you building now? I really love this idea of DIY culture.”

Weapons will have various trade-offs. A modified blade might inflict more damage but consume more stamina. Players can select different builds based on their playstyle.

Exploration is closely tied to survival. Players must continually search for food, water, and supplies to sustain their communities. The game encourages risk-taking, as better resources are often found in more perilous locations.

‘State of Decay 3’ is now available for wishlisting and is scheduled to launch in 2027. It will be released on XBOX Series X|S, XBOX on PC, cloud, Steam, and PlayStation 5, and will be included with Game Pass. It also supports XBOX Play Anywhere for console and PC.

With its expansive world, deeper systems, and enhanced co-op design, Undead Labs aims to elevate the survival series into a more interconnected and dynamic direction while maintaining its core focus on community and survival.
