The new Star Wars film ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ is facing challenges at the box office, experiencing a disappointing third weekend in theaters. The movie saw a significant drop of about 59% compared to its second weekend and has fallen out of the domestic top five.

Directed by Jon Favreau, the film continues the narrative from the Disney+ series of the same name. It features Pedro Pascal as the Mandalorian and Sigourney Weaver in a new role as Colonel Ward. Despite its strong brand recognition, the film’s performance is lagging behind earlier Star Wars releases.

During its opening Memorial Day weekend, the film earned approximately 98 million dollars in the United States. This figure is lower than previous Star Wars openings and even slightly below the 103 million dollars earned by ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ during its own Memorial Day debut. Industry sources like Deadline have characterized the opening as soft for such a prominent franchise.

The situation worsened in the second weekend, with the film experiencing a 69% drop from its initial weekend earnings. Such a decline typically indicates weak word of mouth or significant competition from new releases. Now in its third weekend, estimates suggest it will earn around 10 million dollars, bringing its total domestic earnings to about 155.8 million dollars so far, according to projections shared by Deadline and reported by Forbes.

The film’s budget further highlights the situation. Reportedly costing around 165 million dollars to produce, with marketing expenses adding at least another 100 million dollars, the film needs robust global performance to achieve profitability, which now appears uncertain.

Competition is significantly impacting the film’s performance. New releases are capturing audience attention away from the Star Wars film. Paramount’s new ‘Scary Movie’ reboot and Amazon’s MGM Studios’ ‘Masters of the Universe’ are both projected to open strongly, with ‘Scary Movie’ expected to earn around 55 million dollars and ‘Masters of the Universe’ tracking near 29 million dollars for its debut weekend.

Meanwhile, smaller films are performing surprisingly well. A24’s horror project ‘Backrooms’ continues to hold steady despite a sharp decline in its second weekend and is expected to surpass 130 million dollars in total domestic earnings, according to Variety.

Even more unexpectedly, the low-budget film ‘Obsession’ from Focus Features, made for under one million dollars, has been steadily gaining traction each week. Reports indicate it may exceed 150 million dollars domestically, a rare achievement in today’s box office landscape.

Another new contender is ‘The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act’, a feature connected to a popular YouTube series. Distributed by Fathom Entertainment, it is projected to earn nearly 20 million dollars in its opening weekend from over 2,000 theaters across North America.

Overall, the data indicates a crowded box office where even major franchises like Star Wars are facing intense competition. The Mandalorian’s star-studded cast and brand power are insufficient to ensure consistent performance, particularly with numerous new films vying for the attention of diverse audiences simultaneously.
