‘Michael’ Movie Poised to Shatter Biopic Box Office Records
Few films carry the generational significance of ‘Michael’, the eagerly awaited biographical depiction of the King of Pop. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and featuring Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s real-life nephew, in the titular role, this Lionsgate production has become one of the most discussed theatrical events of the year.
As one major territory prepares to unveil the film, the dialogue surrounding it is taking on a historic significance.
The excitement emerging from Japan this weekend is remarkable. Ahead of its nationwide release, the biopic has been conducting limited early access screenings in premium large-format venues, generating buzz in a market renowned for its enthusiastic reception of music icons. The early figures have caught the attention of box office analysts globally.
Data from Global Box Office indicates that these preview screenings amassed $700,000 this weekend across just 62 IMAX locations, averaging over $11,000 per theater. The film has also received a 4.2-star audience word-of-mouth score in Japan, which analysts note aligns closely with the impressive launch metrics of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, a film that ultimately earned $114 million in Japan alone.
The timing of Japan’s full release is crucial. With one major market yet to open, ‘Michael’ has already accumulated nearly $800 million globally, with $468 million from overseas and $319 million domestically. It is widely viewed as a strong contender to surpass ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’s record of $911 million as the highest-grossing music biopic ever.
The film’s official premiere in Japan occurred in Tokyo ahead of its nationwide release on June 12, attended by Jaafar Jackson, cast members Juliano Valdi, and producer Graham King. Also present were Michael Jackson’s son Prince Jackson and estate representatives John Branca and Karen Langford, along with choreographer Travis Payne, who collaborated closely with Jackson on various projects.
The promotional efforts in Tokyo have matched the significance of the moment. Distributor Kino Films has executed an extensive citywide campaign, featuring a towering outdoor display at TOHO Cinemas Ikebukuro, a massive building-wall display at Shinjuku Wald 9, and a complete aesthetic transformation of the iconic Clappers Diner inside the Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro complex.
Domestically, the film has already achieved remarkable success. ‘Michael’ debuted with $97.2 million in its opening weekend, marking the largest domestic opening in history for a music biopic, and has become only the second music biopic to surpass the $500 million global milestone, following ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

The cast includes Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Scruse-Jackson, Miles Teller as John Branca, Kendrick Sampson as Quincy Jones, and Mike Myers as Walter Yetnikoff. The film chronicles Jackson’s journey from his time as the lead of the Jackson 5 through his early solo career, concluding around the release of his landmark album ‘Off the Wall’ in 1979, with a second film reportedly in development to cover the remainder of his career.
A review from USA Today highlighted Jaafar Jackson’s performance, noting his fluid dance moves and soft-spoken delivery were executed flawlessly, emphasizing that his casting was not merely a matter of nepotism. Such critical acclaim for a debut performance has become one of the film’s most compelling talking points.
With Japan now set for a wide release, the possibility of ‘Michael’ becoming the first billion-dollar biopic in cinema history has never seemed more attainable.
