‘Obsession’ Breaks Major Box Office Record Unexpectedly
The horror film ‘Obsession’ is currently experiencing a remarkable surge at the global box office, as reported by industry sources tracking film earnings and box office milestones.
The movie has surpassed 200 million dollars worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film ever released by Focus Features. In North America, it remains the studio’s top performer, having earned approximately 151 million dollars to date.
What makes this achievement even more noteworthy is the film’s consistent performance. In its fourth weekend, ‘Obsession’ only saw a 7 percent drop in earnings, bringing in 25.6 million dollars. Such a minor decline is uncommon for horror films, which typically experience sharper drops after their opening weekends.
Thanks to this strong hold, ‘Obsession’ has also set new records for the best fourth weekend performance ever for a horror film, surpassing the long-standing record held by ‘The Blair Witch Project’ for over two decades.
Industry data indicates that the film is defying modern box office trends. It is the first movie since ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ to actually increase its earnings in both the second and third weekends, a rarity in today’s market, especially for horror titles.
The film’s success is even more surprising considering its origins. It was acquired at the Toronto International Film Festival for around 15 million dollars, initially perceived as a small genre acquisition rather than a potential global blockbuster.
Produced on a modest budget, director Curry Barker independently shot ‘Obsession’ for about 750,000 dollars, featuring a cast of mostly unknown actors. Prior to this, Barker was recognized for smaller online horror projects and YouTube content, not major studio films.
Following the success of ‘Obsession’, Barker has quickly gained attention as one of Hollywood’s most talked-about new filmmakers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he has already transitioned into larger studio projects and is being closely monitored by major production companies.
He has completed filming his next project, a movie titled Anything But Ghosts, and is also set to direct a new version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for A24, showcasing the rapid advancement of his career after this breakout hit.

Within the industry, the film’s performance is being likened to other unexpected hits that began small but gained momentum through audience reactions. Focus Features has achieved its greatest success with ‘Obsession’, eclipsing other notable titles in its portfolio.
What stands out most is the audience’s response. Instead of fading quickly after its release, the film has continued to grow week after week, a trend that typically indicates strong recommendations and repeat viewings.
For now, ‘Obsession’ continues to ascend the global box office charts, with its run far from over.
