Animated superhero films have emerged as one of the most thrilling aspects of DC Studios’ expanding lineup, and few upcoming projects have sparked as much intrigue as ‘Dynamic Duo.’ This film represents a significant shift from the studio’s live-action offerings, merging an unconventional visual style with a narrative rooted in one of DC’s most beloved sidekick legacies.

The story will delve into the early friendship between Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, who both assume the Robin mantle at different times in DC’s history. Positioned as a passion project for the studio, ‘Dynamic Duo’ is produced by Swaybox Studios, a New Orleans-based animation company making its feature film debut, in collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Matt Reeves’ 6th and Idaho production company.

A recent report has shed light on the financial commitment DC Studios and its partners are making for this ambitious project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Dynamic Duo’ is projected to have a production budget of $90 million, a figure that emerged during coverage of a recent unionization effort among the film’s crew.

This budget figure was provided by workers at Swaybox Studios, who recently voted to unionize with IATSE, marking one of the largest organizing drives in film and television production in recent years. IATSE cited the $90 million budget during their campaign, offering a rare glimpse into the financials of a film that has largely kept its budget under wraps.

What makes this budget particularly noteworthy is the innovative production method behind ‘Dynamic Duo.’ The film employs a blend of computer animation, physical models, and large-scale puppetry, creating a unique look that stands out in the superhero animation landscape.

Director Arthur Mintz, a co-founder of Swaybox, has emphasized that this technique is designed to make Gotham City feel tangible and lived-in rather than solely digital. Early footage presented at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival showcased this distinctive style, including a sequence depicting Jason Todd’s transformation into the Red Hood, visually contrasting how Grayson and Todd perceive themselves through the character’s helmet.

The narrative focuses on Grayson and Todd as orphaned teenagers who bond as self-styled thieves known as the Dynamic Duo, only for their friendship to unravel as their aspirations begin to diverge. As an Elseworlds project, the film exists outside of both Robert Pattinson’s Batman universe and James Gunn’s mainline DCU continuity, allowing the filmmakers to craft a more standalone coming-of-age tale.

Given the extensive puppetry and animation work required, along with the resources needed to create Swaybox’s version of Gotham from the ground up, a budget in this range is not unexpected for a studio’s first theatrical feature. It also underscores the seriousness with which Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and DC Studios are approaching this project, especially with James Gunn producing alongside Reeves.

‘Dynamic Duo’ is currently slated for release on June 30, 2028, providing Swaybox ample time to refine its ambitious visual style before the film hits theaters. With DC Studios managing a busy slate that includes ‘Supergirl,’ ‘Clayface,’ and the sequel to ‘The Batman,’ the studio’s decision to allocate a nine-figure budget to an animated passion project speaks volumes about the film’s significance within its broader strategy.
