Martin Scorsese Advances Hawaii Mob Film Inspired by ‘Goodfellas’
Martin Scorsese is making strides on a long-awaited Hawaii-set mob film, with the script nearing completion and production potentially starting in 2027. Writer Nick Bilton has been developing the screenplay for approximately four months and is now about “95% done,” following extensive feedback from Scorsese himself.
An insider shared with Page Six that Scorsese has emphasized a particular tone for the film, stating, “Marty wanted it to be more voice-over-y, more ‘Goodfellas.’ Those were the marching orders Nick was given.” This approach aims to revive the fast-paced, character-driven storytelling style that Scorsese is renowned for in his classic crime films.
The same source indicated that Bilton has been fine-tuning the script while juggling other responsibilities, including his position at “60 Minutes.” The insider noted he has spent the last four months integrating Scorsese’s notes, suggesting that the project is actively progressing rather than stagnating.
Reportedly, the film was sold to Disney about a year ago. According to Page Six, initial reactions within the studio have been very positive. One insider remarked, “Everyone was ecstatic,” including members of the Disney team, as well as potential cast members like Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.
The narrative will center on real historical events, chronicling the rise and fall of Wilford “Nappy” Pulawa, noted as the first and only Hawaiian mob boss in the state’s history. This project would continue Scorsese’s longstanding fascination with organized crime stories, echoing the tone of films such as ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street.’
However, there remains some ambiguity regarding the production schedule. Page Six reports conflicting rumors about the filming start date, with some suggesting October while others dispute that timeline. Currently, insiders believe production is more likely to commence in 2027 or later, depending on how the latest script revisions unfold.
Scorsese is also engaged in other projects, including post-production on “What Happens at Night,” featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence for Apple. Due to his packed schedule, the Hawaii mob film may need to wait for an appropriate production window.
The report further mentions that speculation about a fall shoot may stem from confusion regarding Scorsese’s overlapping projects. One insider suggested that another film could be the one filming sooner, rather than the Hawaii crime story.
For the time being, the project remains in development, but momentum appears to be building. With a nearly finished script, substantial studio support, and a renewed focus on Scorsese’s signature crime storytelling, this film is shaping up to be one of his most anticipated future releases.
