‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ may have reignited the dinosaur craze at the box office, but the future of the franchise is still being mapped out behind the scenes.

Following the impressive success of the 2025 film, reports indicate that Universal is considering a sequel. Although nothing has been officially confirmed, screenwriter David Koepp has provided an update on the current status.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Koepp revealed that the creative team is still in the early phases of discussing the next steps. Having written both the original ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park’ before returning for ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’, he noted that the main challenge lies in finding a credible way to continue the story.

Instead of planning multiple films simultaneously, Koepp emphasized the importance of focusing on crafting a strong standalone movie first.

“You can’t say trilogy. You got to make one good movie. So now what about another good movie? How would we do that?” he stated.

This approach significantly influenced the development of ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’. Koepp explained that the franchise had expanded so much over the years that he aimed to make the dinosaurs feel special again. One strategy was to limit their appearances and concentrate much of the action in a more confined setting.

“The franchises have become very big, very spread out. Let’s make the dinosaurs special again by restricting them,” Koepp elaborated.

If a sequel is greenlit, the challenge will be to do the opposite without losing the essence that made ‘Rebirth’ successful. Koepp admitted that no one has yet found a solution that feels both logical and scientifically plausible.

“Okay, now how do we logically and in a scientifically believable way expand? That would be the question. If somebody can answer that, I think you’ll have a next movie.”

The comments indicate that Universal is taking a cautious approach with the franchise rather than rushing into another installment. While ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ received mixed reviews from critics, audiences flocked to theaters, with the film grossing $869 million worldwide and even earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects.

The movie also represented a fresh beginning for the series. After the conclusion of the Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard trilogy with ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ in 2022, ‘Rebirth’ introduced a new cast led by Scarlett Johansson. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film became the seventh entry in the long-standing franchise.

The Jurassic saga began with Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel ‘Jurassic Park’. Steven Spielberg adapted the book into one of the most influential blockbuster films in 1993. The success of that film spawned multiple sequels and established one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises.

Even after more than three decades, the series continues to captivate audiences worldwide. However, Koepp’s recent remarks indicate that the next chapter is still far from being finalized.

Currently, Universal has not officially approved a sequel to ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’. There is no confirmed title, release date, cast list, or production schedule. Nevertheless, given the previous film’s significant box office success, it seems likely that the studio is eager to bring dinosaurs back to the big screen sooner rather than later.

Whether the creative team can solve the challenge of expanding the world while keeping the narrative grounded remains the biggest question. Until then, ‘Jurassic’ fans will have to wait and see how the franchise evolves next.
