Director Matt Reeves has officially announced the start of filming for the sequel. He shared a first look from the set, providing fans with their initial glimpse of the movie since its announcement several years ago.

The image has quickly ignited discussions online, as it seemingly depicts a body on an autopsy table, though no details about the identity have been disclosed.

Additionally, the photo showcased an updated version of Robert Pattinson’s Batman logo, offering another small tease about the next chapter in Reeves’ Gotham City universe.

This update marks a significant milestone for the project, which has encountered multiple delays since the release of 2022’s ‘The Batman’. With cameras now rolling, excitement is once again building around Pattinson’s return as the Dark Knight.

The new image has also fueled ongoing speculation regarding the film’s storyline and villains. While DC Studios has remained tight-lipped about plot details, several casting rumors have emerged in recent days.

Reports indicate that actor Sebastian Stan has joined the cast. Initial rumors suggested he would portray Harvey Dent, the Gotham City district attorney who eventually becomes the villain Two-Face. However, newer reports claim Stan might actually be taking on the role of Victor Zsasz, one of Batman’s most formidable foes.

The same rumors suggest that Brian Tyree Henry may be stepping into the role of Harvey Dent. At this point, neither Reeves nor DC Studios has officially confirmed any of these reports.

Another significant addition reportedly joining the sequel is Scarlett Johansson. Previous reports have linked her to the role of Gilda Dent, Harvey Dent’s wife in DC Comics. However, Warner Bros. Discovery has not publicly confirmed this casting information.

While fans are eager to discover who Batman will confront this time, one familiar villain is expected to have a smaller role. Colin Farrell, who portrayed Oz Cobb, better known as the Penguin, recently discussed his involvement in the film during an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley.

Farrell mentioned, “I’m only in two scenes, which is great because it means I can enjoy the rest of the film.”

His comments imply that Reeves is shifting focus toward new characters and potentially a different main villain for the sequel.

The secrecy surrounding the project has only heightened interest among fans. With production now underway, many anticipate set photos and videos to begin surfacing online in the coming months. These images could provide the first real insights into the story, new characters, and the enigmatic figure seen in Reeves’ filming update.

The ‘Batman’ franchise remains distinct from James Gunn’s main DC Universe and continues under the Elseworlds label. This means Pattinson’s Gotham exists in its own continuity, separate from the larger DCU currently being developed.

Nevertheless, 2027 is shaping up to be a monumental year for DC fans. Alongside ‘The Batman – Part II’, Gunn’s new Superman era will continue to unfold, offering audiences two different interpretations of DC’s most iconic heroes on the big screen simultaneously.

For now, however, the focus remains firmly on Gotham. After nearly five years of anticipation, filming has officially commenced, and Robert Pattinson’s Batman is finally one step closer to returning to theaters.

‘The Batman – Part II’ is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027.
