Steven Spielberg’s New Movie ‘Disclosure Day’ Receives Mixed Audience Reactions
Steven Spielberg has created some of the most cherished sci-fi films in cinematic history, but early audience feedback indicates that his latest endeavor may not resonate with viewers as strongly.
According to CinemaScore, ‘Disclosure Day’ has garnered a B grade from audiences following its opening weekend. While this score is generally viewed as positive, it falls short of the ratings achieved by many of the most successful science fiction films over the years.
The audience polling service collects feedback from moviegoers immediately after they exit the theater, making it a key indicator of public reception in the industry.

The film features Emily Blunt and is directed by Spielberg, with a screenplay penned by his longtime collaborator David Koepp. The plot revolves around a mysterious UFO-related narrative, marking Spielberg’s return to a genre that has significantly shaped his career.
While critics have generally responded positively to the film, audience reactions appear to be more mixed. A B CinemaScore places ‘Disclosure Day’ alongside films like ‘District 9’, ‘Tenet’, and ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’. However, it lags behind several major sci-fi titles that received stronger audience ratings.
Timeless classics such as ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ and ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ both achieved the highest possible CinemaScore grade of A+. More recent successes like ‘The Martian’, ‘Project Hail Mary’, and ‘Dune: Part Two’ earned A ratings from audiences. Other well-regarded science fiction films, including ‘Dune’, ‘Blade Runner 2049’, ‘Ready Player One’, and ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’, received A- grades.
Conversely, ‘Disclosure Day’ outperformed some sci-fi films that struggled to win over audiences. ‘Ad Astra’ received a B-, while ‘Reminiscence’ earned a C+ and ‘Annihilation’ finished with a C grade.

The film had its premiere at Le Grand Rex in Paris on June 2 before hitting theaters across the United States on June 12. To date, it has earned $6.6 million globally. While these figures are still preliminary, industry analysts will be closely monitoring the film’s performance in the weeks ahead.
‘Disclosure Day’ features a talented ensemble cast, including Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. The project was first reported in 2024 when news surfaced that Spielberg was working on a UFO-themed movie. Universal Pictures later came on board as the distributor, and production took place between February and May 2025 in various locations, including Atlanta, New Jersey, and New York.
Despite the mixed audience score, critics have lauded several elements of the film. Reviews have praised Spielberg’s direction, Blunt’s performance, John Williams’ score, the visual effects, and the storytelling.
For Spielberg, the CinemaScore result may come as a surprise given his extensive history of creating crowd-pleasing sci-fi adventures. Films like ‘E.T.’, ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’, and ‘Jurassic Park’ became cultural landmarks due to their strong connections with both critics and audiences.
Whether ‘Disclosure Day’ can gain traction through word of mouth remains uncertain. For now, the film has ignited considerable discussion, with viewers divided on whether Spielberg’s latest venture into science fiction meets the high expectations set by his iconic classics.
