Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’ Strong Opening Weekend Box Office Projections
Steven Spielberg’s latest sci-fi film ‘Disclosure Day’ is off to a promising start at the box office, although another film is making even bigger waves in the industry.
As per early box office estimates from The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Disclosure Day’ is projected to earn approximately $44 million during its opening weekend in North America. Starring Emily Blunt, the film explores the intriguing premise of humanity discovering that extraterrestrial life may already be among us.
The movie raked in about $19 million on Friday, including preview screenings, marking one of the strongest openings of Spielberg’s recent career. If these projections hold true, ‘Disclosure Day’ will achieve the largest domestic opening weekend ever for an original film directed by Spielberg.
The iconic filmmaker conceived the story idea himself before entrusting screenplay duties to his longtime collaborator David Koepp, known for his work with Spielberg on ‘Jurassic Park’. The film reportedly had a production budget of around $115 million and is expected to conclude its first weekend with nearly $94 million globally.
Critics have responded positively to the film, commending Spielberg’s direction and the cast’s performances. However, audience reactions have been more mixed, resulting in a B CinemaScore. Regardless, the opening figures indicate a strong appetite for original science-fiction narratives on the big screen.
While ‘Disclosure Day’ enjoys a successful debut, the real box office highlight remains ‘Obsession’. This horror thriller directed by Curry Barker continues to show remarkable resilience nearly five weeks post-release.
The film is expected to earn another $21 million this weekend, reflecting only a slight decline from the previous week. Notably, ‘Obsession’ has now grossed more in four consecutive weekends than it did during its original opening weekend, which brought in $17.2 million.

Such performance is quite rare in contemporary cinema, where most films see significant declines after their opening weekend. ‘Obsession’ has continued to draw in new audiences thanks to strong word-of-mouth and positive feedback from viewers.
By the end of the weekend, ‘Obsession’ is expected to reach around $190 million domestically, solidifying its status as one of the biggest horror hits of the year and the highest-grossing film in the history of its studio, Focus Features, both in North America and globally.
Other films currently in theaters are experiencing more typical results. Paramount’s ‘Scary Movie’ is projected to secure third place in its second weekend with approximately $15 million. Meanwhile, ‘Backrooms’, another favorite among younger audiences, is expected to earn around $12 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to roughly $160 million.
In contrast, ‘Masters of the Universe’ continues to struggle at the box office, with projections indicating just over $9 million in its second weekend, a significant drop from its debut.
Currently, the theater landscape showcases two very different success stories. ‘Disclosure Day’ reaffirms Steven Spielberg’s status as one of Hollywood’s most dependable directors in attracting audiences, while ‘Obsession’ continues to exceed expectations and establish itself as one of the most surprising box office phenomena of 2026.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, both films are contributing to a bustling summer movie season, but it is ‘Obsession’s’ incredible staying power that remains the industry’s hot topic.
