Tyra Banks is pursuing legal action against Netflix concerning a recent documentary series about ‘America’s Next Top Model’. As reported by Variety, the former host and executive producer contends that the series misrepresented her remarks and created a misleading narrative regarding her involvement in controversial moments from the long-running reality show.

The lawsuit, filed on Saturday, names Netflix, the production companies behind the project, and the documentary’s directors as defendants. Banks accuses them of defamation, false light, breach of contract, and false endorsement.

At the heart of the dispute is the documentary series ‘Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model’. According to the lawsuit, Banks participated in an extensive interview for the project that lasted over three hours. However, she claims that only a small portion of that conversation was included in the final cut seen by viewers.

The lawsuit asserts that the interview was heavily edited, altering the meaning of her statements. Banks’ legal team argues that significant parts of her comments were omitted, including instances where she took responsibility for mistakes and shortcomings related to the reality competition series.

The complaint claims that the remaining content in the documentary was presented in a manner that supported a negative narrative about Banks.

One significant issue involves former ‘America’s Next Top Model’ contestant Shandi Sullivan. According to the lawsuit, the documentary included a discussion about an incident during Sullivan’s time on the show. Banks alleges that producers inquired about Sullivan without providing crucial context regarding how the event would later be portrayed in the documentary.

The lawsuit states that viewers were shown a moment where Banks seemed to hesitate when asked if she remembered Sullivan’s story. The legal filing claims that the scene cuts away shortly after, creating a misleading impression.

Her attorneys argue that the complete footage presents a very different narrative. According to the complaint, the unedited recording shows Banks immediately acknowledging that she remembered the contestant and her experience.

The lawsuit claims that the editing choice was intentional and designed to convey a false narrative. “The implication is devastating and deliberate,” the complaint states.

Banks’ legal team also asserts that the documentary incorrectly implies she knowingly overlooked serious issues involving contestants during the original series’ production. The lawsuit firmly denies these allegations, labeling them as entirely false.

According to the filing, Banks believes the final documentary failed to accurately reflect her actual statements during the interview.

“That narrative about Ms. Banks is a complete fabrication,” the lawsuit claims. ‘America’s Next Top Model’ first premiered in 2003 and became one of the most successful reality competition shows of its time. Banks hosted for 22 seasons and became a prominent figure in reality television.

The documentary revisited many controversial moments from the show’s history and explored how some contestants viewed their experiences years later. While the series sparked significant online discussion, Banks now contends that the production crossed a line by presenting edited material misleadingly.

As reported by Variety, Banks is seeking a jury trial and pursuing punitive damages, although the specific amount has not been publicly revealed.

Currently, Netflix has not issued a public response to the allegations. The case is anticipated to progress through the legal system in the upcoming months, allowing both parties to present their evidence regarding the documentary’s production.
