The summer of 2026 has been dominated by one film, the Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael’, which has demonstrated that the King of Pop’s box office appeal remains as potent as ever. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and featuring Jaafar Jackson, the late superstar’s nephew, the film has steadily climbed the global box office charts since its release on April 24.

‘Michael’ has achieved numerous records, including the largest opening weekend for a musical biopic and surpassing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in many international markets. With a production budget nearing 200 million dollars, the stakes were high, but audiences have shown sustained enthusiasm, leading to impressive ticket sales.

Recently, the film reached a significant milestone. According to box office reports, ‘Michael’ earned an additional 17.1 million dollars internationally during its eighth weekend, experiencing only a 10.5 percent drop, thanks in part to its long-awaited debut in Japan. This brings its international total to 569.4 million dollars across 85 markets, and combined with its 362.8 million dollar domestic earnings, the film has officially crossed the 1 billion dollar mark globally, making it the first music biopic in history to achieve this feat.

The release in Japan was crucial to this success. ‘Michael’ garnered 2.3 million dollars on its opening Friday, including 653,000 dollars from limited previews, setting a record for biopics in the region and marking the second biggest Hollywood opening day of the year. This debut more than doubled the opening day gross of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in Japan.

The anticipation for the Japanese release had been building for weeks. Distributor Kino Films launched an extensive promotional campaign called the MICHAEL Tokyo Takeover, transforming parts of the city to celebrate the film’s arrival. This included a massive outdoor display at TOHO Cinemas Ikebukuro and a large wall display at Shinjuku Wald 9, alongside a complete MICHAEL-themed makeover of Clappers Diner inside Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro.

In comparison, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, the Freddie Mercury biopic that previously held the record for music biopics, concluded its run with approximately 911 million dollars worldwide. ‘Michael’ had already surpassed that figure before fully accounting for its Japanese box office weekend, and the strong debut in Tokyo only widened the gap. Notably, ‘Oppenheimer’, Christopher Nolan’s awards contender, had grossed 891 million dollars worldwide at a similar point in its run, a number that ‘Michael’ has now comfortably exceeded.

Beyond its impressive box office numbers, ‘Michael’ has reignited interest in Jackson’s music catalog. Following the film’s release, listeners have flocked back to classics like Thriller and Off the Wall, with streaming numbers for both his solo work and his recordings with the Jackson 5 seeing significant increases, introducing his music to a new generation.

The film’s success has also made history in another way. Its global earnings have positioned it as the highest-grossing film with an all-Black principal cast outside of the Marvel universe, trailing only behind Black Panther’s 1.38 billion dollar total and surpassing Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s 858 million dollars.

With Japan continuing to perform well into its opening weekend and other international markets like Russia still contributing to the total, industry experts now believe ‘Michael’ has a genuine chance of reaching 1.05 billion dollars before its theatrical run concludes. For a film that faced years of delays, reshoots, and skepticism from some members of the Jackson family, crossing the billion dollar threshold is a remarkable achievement.

As ‘Michael’ continues its successful run in theaters worldwide, the focus now shifts to how high its final box office total could go and whether any other 2026 release, aside from ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, can compete for the year’s box office crown. What do you think contributed to ‘Michael’ surpassing the billion dollar mark, and where do you anticipate its final total will land? Share your thoughts in the comments.
