Recent comments from DC Studios leadership, including insights from co-CEO James Gunn and producer Peter Safran, provide a clearer yet still uncertain outlook on the future of the DC Universe slate.

One key takeaway is that the DC Universe continues to evolve following its reboot under the “Gods and Monsters” chapter. Some projects are progressing, others are delayed, and a few have been shelved.

A significant confirmed update is that the film ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is currently in production, with a release expected in summer 2027. This film is part of the upcoming wave of DC storytelling and is already filming, making it one of the most stable projects in the lineup.

Additionally, Gunn confirmed that some previously announced projects remain in development. These include the ‘Booster Gold’ television series and the ‘Paradise Lost’ series, which aim to explore different aspects of the DC universe, focusing on lesser-known characters and their stories.

However, not all projects are progressing smoothly. The originally planned film ‘The Authority’ has encountered significant issues. Initially announced as part of the DCU reboot plan under Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, Gunn described it as a “big movie” centered on a violent superhero team from the WildStorm universe. Unfortunately, the project has lost momentum compared to other titles in development.

In a surprising update, there are discussions about a potential ‘Gorilla Grodd’ and ‘Jimmy Olsen’ project for HBO. According to comments from DC Studios leadership, this idea may already be in production or nearing that stage, although details remain vague. Producer Peter Safran indicated that filming could begin this year, positioning it as one of the most advanced projects in the current DC TV slate.

The combination of Gorilla Grodd, a super-intelligent ape villain, with Jimmy Olsen, a reporter from the Superman universe, has garnered attention due to its contrasting tones. One aspect is dark and villain-centric, while the other is rooted in journalism and everyday life in Metropolis. This unique blend is what makes the project intriguing in early discussions.

Currently, there are only a few confirmed release dates in the DC Universe. The HBO series ‘Lanterns’ is progressing, along with films like ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Clayface’. These titles, along with ‘Man of Tomorrow’, represent the clearest part of the upcoming schedule.

However, much of the DC slate remains uncertain. The futures of ‘Booster Gold’, ‘Paradise Lost’, and the ‘Gorilla Grodd / Jimmy Olsen’ project will depend on how production evolves over the next year.

At this stage, DC Studios is navigating a transition period. Some projects are solidly moving forward, while others are still being redefined or waiting for the right moment to fully kick off.
