HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series has welcomed a new familiar face to its expanding cast, with Peter Serafinowicz set to portray the mischievous poltergeist Peeves.

This casting was confirmed through industry reports and production updates related to the series, which is currently in development at HBO. Peeves is a chaotic spirit haunting the halls of Hogwarts, known in the books for creating mischief for both students and staff. Although he is a beloved character in J.K. Rowling’s novels, he was notably absent from the original film series.

Serafinowicz is represented by Curtis Brown Group, UTA, 3 Arts, and Peikoff Mahan. He recently appeared in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon film released last year. He is also well-known for his roles as Edgar Covington in Parks and Recreation and Denarian Saal in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).

In addition to his live-action roles, Serafinowicz has established a strong career in voice acting. He famously voiced Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and has lent his voice to characters in animated films such as Sing and Sing 2, where he played Big Daddy.

The inclusion of Peeves has already generated excitement among fans, as the character has a unique history within the franchise. In the original film adaptation plans, British comedian Rik Mayall was cast as Peeves and even filmed scenes before the character was ultimately cut due to pacing and runtime issues.

Mayall later recounted the experience, sharing how he briefly worked on the film before being informed that his scenes would not be used. He humorously noted, “I did a little bit of filming then I went home and got the money – significant – then a month later they said ‘Rik, sorry about this, you’re not in the film.’” He later explained the situation to his children in a lighthearted manner, believing he still appeared in the final movie.

HBO’s new adaptation of Harry Potter is being developed as a long-running series, with each season expected to adapt one book from the original novels. This project aims to delve deeper into the source material than the original films could.

According to Warner Bros. Discovery executives, the series aims to broaden the storytelling scope and provide a more in-depth version of the wizarding world. As JB Perrette, WBD’s president of global streaming and games, previously described, the project is intended to be a significant streaming event with a more detailed approach to the story and characters.

The series has already confirmed several major cast members. Dominic McLaughlin will portray Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow has been cast as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.

Written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, the series is set to premiere in December on HBO and HBO Max. Production is also expected to extend beyond the first season, with Season 2 already underway.

With Serafinowicz joining as Peeves, the series continues to expand its cast, bringing to life more of the book’s lesser-seen characters, a facet that the original films never fully explored.
