Marvel enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating news regarding ‘Shang-Chi 2’. While many are focused on upcoming projects like ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, interest remains high in seeing Simu Liu reprise his role in a sequel. The encouraging news is that the project has not been scrapped.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton shared insights on Deadline’s Crew Call podcast, confirming that ‘Shang-Chi 2’ is still in the works. Cretton appeared alongside Wonder Man co-creator Andrew Guest and discussed the reasons behind the delay in the sequel’s development.

“We are developing a second one,” Cretton stated. “You know, what’s going on is what went on with the entire industry since that, you know, that movie came out, like it was successful, but it actually came out weirdly. It was successful at the time when there was like a new wave of COVID was hitting. So, it was still successful, but it was also, I think many countries were completely shut down to theaters at the time. So, and you know, after that, there were just crazy changes all over the place. So, it was, it’s just a result of the industry.”

The original ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ debuted in 2021 and quickly became a fan favorite within the Marvel Multiverse Saga. Following its success, Marvel announced a sequel with Cretton returning as both writer and director. However, nearly five years later, fans are still awaiting the next installment.

Cretton explained that the delays are tied to the challenges faced by the film industry during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. When ‘Shang-Chi’ was released, theaters worldwide were grappling with restrictions. Some countries had completely closed theaters, while others had limited seating. Film productions were also navigating strict health and safety protocols.

These challenges impacted numerous projects across Hollywood, and ‘Shang-Chi 2’ appears to be among them. The director indicated that the prolonged wait is not due to Marvel losing interest in the character, but rather a reflection of the significant changes the entire industry underwent during that time.

The delay may also be linked to Marvel’s evolving plans. Since the release of the first film, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has experienced several shifts, including changes to release schedules and story arcs. Given that ‘Shang-Chi’ is part of a larger interconnected universe, these alterations could have influenced the sequel’s direction.

Fans have also noted that ‘Shang-Chi’ has been largely absent from the MCU since his solo film. Simu Liu has not made significant appearances in Marvel movies since then, which has only heightened the demand for a sequel. While the character is expected to return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, many fans are still eager to see him lead another solo adventure.

Currently, Marvel has not revealed a release date for ‘Shang-Chi 2’. Nevertheless, Cretton’s latest update reassures fans that the movie is still in development. While this may not be the major announcement fans were hoping for, it does indicate that Marvel has not overlooked one of its most beloved newer heroes.
