Gotham City has remained silent for quite some time. Since ‘The Batman’ premiered in 2022 and ‘The Penguin’ followed two years later, fans have eagerly awaited any indication that Matt Reeves is ready to send Robert Pattinson’s iconic detective back into the shadows.

This anticipation has been prolonged by script delays, scheduling changes, and multiple pushed-back release dates, leaving fans hungry for even the slightest hint of news. So, when production on ‘The Batman: Part II’ finally commenced in the United Kingdom this month, featuring Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell alongside newcomers like Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, and Brian Tyree Henry, Reeves quickly returned to his familiar practice of teasing fans via social media.

His initial image from the set featured a clapperboard adorned with the franchise’s signature red and black bat symbol, placed in front of what seemed to be a body on a slab, with cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt credited on the slate. Just days later, Reeves shared a second image that has fans diving into their comic book collections.

The new image features a Robert Pattinson Batman Funko Pop standing watch beside a digital clock on the production sound cart, with the display reading eight twelve in the morning.

According to a theory highlighted by Cosmic Book News, the specific time displayed on the clock has fans buzzing. The theory suggests that eight twelve references Detective Comics issue number 812, which is part of David Lapham’s City of Crime storyline. This comic arc delves into a sprawling Gotham tale filled with civic corruption, a rigged mayoral election, and a criminal underworld quietly manipulating the city.

Anyone who watched ‘The Batman’ will recognize the familiar themes. The first film revolved around a corrupt mayoral election, the murder of Mayor Don Mitchell, and Bella Real’s campaign to clean up Gotham, all intertwined with Paul Dano’s Riddler plot. If Reeves is indeed nodding to Lapham’s storyline, it suggests the sequel will delve deeper into the detective-driven civic decay rather than pursuing flashy new gimmicks.

However, there is a simpler explanation for the clock’s display. The time also clearly shows AM and MON, indicating it could simply timestamp the moment the photo was taken on a Monday morning. Reeves is known for leaving breadcrumbs in his marketing, but he has yet to address this theory, leaving it as pure fan speculation for now.

This timing detail coincided nicely with another tease that surfaced around the same week. Jeffrey Wright shared a close-up photo of his mustache on Instagram, confirming his return as Jim Gordon and joking that things were starting all over again, a line fans quickly connected to the clock motif Reeves seems to be developing across these early posts.

Pattinson has been building excitement for months. “The script is extraordinary,” Pattinson told Deadline earlier this year, adding that the film feels very different from the first installment and is taking some genuinely bold risks.

While plot specifics for ‘The Batman: Part II’ remain under wraps, the returning cast and the noir-inspired visuals thus far suggest Reeves is committed to the detective-heavy tone that distinguished the original. The sequel is currently slated for release on October 1, 2027, providing fans ample time to analyze every clock, prop, and clapperboard Reeves decides to unveil in the meantime.
