Amanda Seyfried has opened up about the challenging time she experienced after expressing her views on conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The actress shared that the online backlash became so overwhelming that she felt compelled to hire a bodyguard for her safety.

In a recent interview with British GQ, Seyfried reflected on how swiftly public discussions can escalate into aggression. She emphasized the importance of sharing opinions while maintaining respect for others. According to her, the backlash was just a glimpse of the broader hostility that can manifest online.

The controversy began in September 2025, following Kirk’s tragic death. Seyfried commented on an Instagram Reel that showcased some of Kirk’s past remarks, stating, “He was hateful.” This comment sparked strong reactions from Kirk’s supporters, many of whom criticized Seyfried for her words.

As the backlash intensified, Seyfried took to Instagram again to clarify her stance. She expressed that while she disagreed with certain comments, she also believed that violence was unacceptable. She wrote, “I can get angry about misogyny and racist rhetoric and ALSO very much agree that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable.”

In her conversation with British GQ, Seyfried asserted that she felt justified in voicing her opinions. She stated that individuals should be able to express their thoughts without facing extreme backlash. She remarked, “A, I’m allowed to f**king voice my feelings, and B, do it in a way that’s not unkind necessarily. But there’s just an outsized fear and hatred and impulse to bash and to tear down. And I experienced a very small fraction of that.”

The actress also expressed her desire for her children to feel secure in sharing their own opinions in the future. She emphasized the importance of honest expression while steering clear of harmful behavior, adding, “I want my kids to be able to feel safe to voice their opinions as long as they’re not harmful.”

Seyfried described the surreal experience of needing extra security, saying, “And then all of a sudden I find myself with a f**king bodyguard at the airport and I’m like, ‘This is crazy.’”

The Mamma Mia star had previously addressed the incident in a November 2025 interview with Who What Wear, where she stated she had no intention of apologizing for her original comment. She maintained that her words reflected her personal views and that she had the right to express them.

Seyfried also mentioned that she felt her initial comment was taken out of context. In her discussion with Who What Wear, she appreciated the opportunity to clarify her position and regain control over the narrative, saying, “Thank God for Instagram. I was able to give some clarity, and it was about getting my voice back because I felt like it had been stolen and recontextualized – which is what people do, of course.”

Charlie Kirk, who was 31 years old, was killed on September 10, 2025, after being shot during an event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was the founder of Turning Point USA and is survived by his wife, Erika Kirk, and their two children.

The suspect in the case, Tyler Robinson, has been charged with aggravated murder and several other offenses. The case continues to attract significant public attention, with discussions and reactions resonating across both political and entertainment spheres.
