‘Bloodaxe’ Officially Renewed for Season 2 at Prime Video
Prime Video is demonstrating strong confidence in its upcoming Viking series ‘Bloodaxe’. Even before its premiere, the streaming service has already confirmed a second season for the show.
‘Bloodaxe’ has received a season 2 order more than six months prior to its debut. The historical drama is set to arrive on Prime Video in early 2027, with production for the next chapter already underway. Filming for season 2 is slated to begin in Dublin, Ireland, in August 2026.
The series is crafted by ‘Vikings’ creator Michael Hirst and his son Horatio Hirst. It follows Erik Bloodaxe, portrayed by Xavier Molyneux, a renowned Viking warrior destined to become King of Norway. Jessica Madsen plays his wife, Gunnhild, who will significantly influence his ascent to power.
Following the renewal announcement, Michael Hirst expressed his enthusiasm for the show’s future and thanked Prime Video for their early support.
“As the writers and showrunners of ‘Bloodaxe’, Horatio and I are thrilled to announce that Amazon have also already commissioned a second season of our new Norse saga for Prime Video, which begins shooting in Ireland within a few weeks.”
Hirst also commended Amazon MGM Studios for their belief in the series and shared insights on what audiences can anticipate when the show finally debuts.
“We are incredibly proud of how ‘Bloodaxe’ has turned out, featuring remarkable storylines, a powerful depiction of Viking beliefs, and a dramatic portrayal of the transition from paganism to Christianity, along with our use of magic realism to immerse the audience in a Viking mindset.”
He expressed excitement for global audiences to explore Norse history through this new series.
The early renewal indicates that Prime Video views ‘Bloodaxe’ as a significant long-term project. The series is expected to delve into Erik’s rise to power while also addressing the social, political, and religious transformations of the era. Similar to ‘Vikings’, the show will intertwine historical events with compelling storytelling.
Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, also commented on the renewal, praising the creators and expressing confidence in the series.
“Michael and Horatio are exceptional storytellers whose work has consistently showcased the global appeal of ambitious historical drama.”
He described ‘Bloodaxe’ as a large-scale production featuring strong characters and intricate historical narratives.
The cast includes various actors portraying both historical figures and original characters. Alongside Molyneux and Madsen, the series features Levi Miller, Karlis Arnolds Avots, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, and Rune Temte.
Currently, Prime Video has not released a trailer or any promotional material. As a result, many aspects of the show’s visual style and tone remain undisclosed. However, fans of ‘Vikings’ are likely eager to see how the new series tackles Viking culture, power dynamics, and historical events.
With a second season already secured before the first episode has even aired, ‘Bloodaxe’ is poised to be one of Prime Video’s most anticipated historical dramas. More details about the series are expected to emerge as its 2027 premiere approaches.
