Amanda Seyfried Reveals She Almost Tried Cocaine After ‘Mean Girls’ Fame
Amanda Seyfried rose to fame as Karen Smith in ‘Mean Girls’, but the rapid attention that followed her success also brought new challenges. In a recent interview with GQ, the actress candidly reflected on her early years in Hollywood, sharing a moment when she nearly made a risky decision.
Seyfried described her 20s as a wild time, filled with the excitement of fame but also the awareness of the dangers that accompany being young and famous in Hollywood’s party scene. She expressed concern about becoming a target for negative headlines, having witnessed other young stars struggle under intense media scrutiny.
“The outsized bashing is ugly,” Seyfried told GQ. “It’s like a fear of mine. I would not want to be spotlit for being infamous in any way.”
One actress who faced that pressure was her ‘Mean Girls’ co-star Lindsay Lohan. While their paths diverged post-movie, Seyfried recognized how easy it is for young actors to get swept up in the lifestyle that fame can bring.
Despite the challenges, Seyfried did not shy away from all wild experiences. She admitted to enjoying her youth in Los Angeles, recalling memorable nights out after moving there as a teenager. “Did I go clubbing? Yeah,” she said, reminiscing about an unusual night at actor Val Kilmer’s house with ‘Mean Girls’ co-stars Daniel Franzese and Jonathan Bennett following a screening of ‘Reefer Madness’.
“I was 18, and I had just moved to LA, and we had gone to a screening of Reefer Madness. I was at Val Kilmer’s house – I don’t even remember meeting him, but I was at his house,” Seyfried recalled.
However, she also had moments of restraint. One significant instance was when she had the opportunity to try cocaine for the first time at the famed Chateau Marmont hotel.

“My 20s were ridiculous,” Seyfried said. “I found myself in many places. I also remember there was a time I could have done cocaine for the first time at the Chateau [Marmont], and I didn’t because I was scared.”
She noted that her fear helped her establish boundaries. Rather than fully embracing the party lifestyle, she aimed to maintain control over her choices.
“There was a limit to how much partying I was going to do, because I only wanted to be so drunk that I could [still] get myself home,” she explained.
Seyfried has also previously discussed her experiences with obsessive-compulsive disorder and how it influenced her decisions. She believes her personality and approach to anxiety played a crucial role in helping her avoid the pitfalls that ensnared other young stars.
Today, Seyfried enjoys a thriving career in film and television. From ‘Mean Girls’ to roles in ‘Mamma Mia!’, ‘The Dropout’, and other significant projects, she has established herself as one of Hollywood’s most esteemed actresses.
Reflecting on her past, Seyfried views her younger years as filled with unforgettable moments, yet she is thankful for the choices that have allowed her to grow both personally and professionally.
