Anya Taylor-Joy Stuns in Beach Editorial Ahead of ‘Lucky’ Release Date
There are actors who grace magazines, and then there are those who seem to transform the publication around them. Anya Taylor-Joy undoubtedly falls into the latter category, and her latest magazine appearance powerfully showcases her unique presence at this pivotal moment in her career.
Since her breakout role in ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ on Netflix, Taylor-Joy has garnered international acclaim, seamlessly transitioning into films like ‘The Witch’ and major blockbusters alike.
Her upcoming projects highlight an actress in high demand, featuring roles in Apple TV’s ‘Lucky’ and Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three’, along with a newly announced part in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’. The next few years promise to be a defining chapter in her career.
This momentum is evident in the cover of The Hollywood Reporter’s June issue, where she is described as the “rule-defying movie star who’s poised to make her biggest splash yet.” The editorial, shot by Myles Hendrik, showcases Taylor-Joy in a breathtaking beach setting, with the ocean as a stunning backdrop. One striking image captures her dramatically against the tide, arms raised, her dress sculpted by the wind and water, merging fashion with nature.
This cover story coincides with Taylor-Joy’s return to television after a six-year hiatus from leading a streaming series, anchored by the Apple TV crime thriller miniseries ‘Lucky’, which premieres on July 15. Not only is Taylor-Joy the star of ‘Lucky’, but she also serves as an executive producer through her production company, Ladykiller, with Reese Witherspoon’s media company Hello Sunshine also involved in the project.
Based on the New York Times bestselling novel and Reese’s Book Club pick by Marissa Stapley, ‘Lucky’ follows con artist Lucky Armstrong, who must go on the run after a multi-million-dollar heist goes awry, pursued by both the FBI and a ruthless crime boss.
Annette Bening plays the crime boss Priscilla, while Timothy Olyphant portrays Lucky’s father John, adding a personal layer to the high-stakes chase. The ensemble cast also includes Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as FBI agent Billie Rand, Drew Starkey as Lucky’s husband Cary, along with Clifton Collins Jr. and William Fichtner in supporting roles.
‘Lucky’ consists of seven episodes, with the first two releasing simultaneously at the July premiere, followed by new episodes every Wednesday until August 19. The summer release means the series will not be eligible for the Emmys until the next cycle, but it is well-positioned for the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and other winter awards.
The series was co-showrun, written, and executive produced by Jonathan Tropper alongside co-showrunner Cassie Pappas, with Taylor-Joy’s producer credit indicating her deep creative investment beyond just acting.
With a career-defining cover shoot and a return to television in a project she helped shape, Taylor-Joy is clearly not just showing up. The question for fans is whether ‘Lucky’ will create an Emmy-worthy cultural moment akin to ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, or if it will carve out its own unique legacy. What do you think? Does the chemistry of this ensemble give you confidence that this role will redefine her television legacy?
