New ‘Supergirl’ Footage Released by ODEON Cinemas as Milly Alcock Prepares for Her Solo Debut
With only a few days left until Kara Zor-El makes her highly anticipated solo debut on the big screen, the promotional efforts for ‘Supergirl’ have intensified significantly. DC Studios and Warner Bros. have been steadily building excitement for the Girl of Steel’s first standalone film in decades, and now fresh footage has emerged through an unexpected yet enthusiastic partner in ODEON Cinemas, offering audiences another glimpse at what Milly Alcock brings to the role.
ODEON has fully embraced the partnership, establishing itself as the go-to destination for the film. The new featurette released by the cinema chain provides a closer look at Alcock fully embodying the character in various filming locations.
The footage showcases a grittier, more dynamic energy than fans might typically expect from a superhero origin story, reinforcing the tone that the creative team has been communicating for months.
The featurette emphasizes that ‘Supergirl’ is not about playing it safe or relegating Kara to a mere footnote in her cousin’s legacy. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios and producer on the film, stated in the featurette that “Supergirl was raised on a chunk of a disintegrated planet, people were dying all around her, she’s not Superman and she’s definitely not Clark Kent.” Director Craig Gillespie added, “Milly is absolutely killing it. She’s really inhabited this character in the best way. I couldn’t imagine anybody else in this role.”
Throughout the press campaign, Alcock has consistently emphasized the importance of approaching this film without preconceived notions. Speaking directly to ODEON, Alcock remarked, “I think people are expecting a sidekick film to Superman, like, she’s kind of in the periphery of his film. But what they’re actually gonna get is a really kick-ass Supergirl.” This sentiment reflects both the character’s emotional stakes and the ambitious nature of the project.
Alcock also elaborated on the character’s motivations in the featurette, stating, “Supergirl’s fueled by this pain, fueled by this hurt.” Jason Momoa, who portrays Lobo in the film, added his own memorable take on Alcock’s performance: “She’s not afraid to punch everyone in the face.” For a film that is framed as a cosmic road trip exploring themes of grief and identity, this blend of raw emotion and physical intensity speaks volumes about what director Craig Gillespie is crafting.
The source material for ‘Supergirl’ is one of the most acclaimed comic runs in recent years. The film is based on a 2022 comic book series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, which follows Kara Zor-El as she journeys through the cosmos with Krypto the Superdog, meeting an alien girl named Ruthye who seeks revenge for her father’s death and enlists Supergirl’s help. While the film has clearly taken creative liberties with the source material, the emotional core of the story seems to remain intact.
Gunn has credited the decision to make ‘Supergirl’ the second film in the new DCU to the quality of Ana Nogueira’s script, stating, “The reason is because the script by Ana Nogueira was the best script I’d read in a long time. And at the end of the day, everything we do at DC is story driven.” Such high praise from the leader of the entire DC slate carries significant weight, especially for a property that could have easily been treated as secondary.
Before filming even began, Gunn made his feelings about Alcock’s suitability for the role abundantly clear. During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show in September 2025, Gunn described Alcock’s performance as “absolutely stunning” and went further, saying she “might be the best bit of casting I think I’ve ever done in my entire life.” Such remarks are not made lightly, and early footage has only reinforced the confidence behind that assertion.
The film’s ensemble cast features Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle, David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Kara’s parents Zor-El and Alura, and Jason Momoa as the unpredictable Lobo, with each addition suggesting a film rich in texture and depth beyond its central hero.
‘Supergirl’ is set to hit theaters and IMAX on June 26, and the ODEON featurette is just the latest indication that DC Studios is leaving nothing to chance in its final promotional push.
