‘Matlock’ Showrunner Sued for Alleged Juneteenth Insult and Harassment Claims
The CBS series ‘Matlock’ is embroiled in a legal dispute after a former writer, John Lowe, filed a lawsuit claiming that the show’s leadership fostered a hostile work environment. The complaint was submitted in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging that Lowe was terminated after voicing concerns about purportedly racist and inappropriate conduct involving showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and other producers.
In the lawsuit, Lowe describes experiencing discriminatory and uncomfortable situations while working on the Kathy Bates-led legal drama. He alleges that Urman made a derogatory remark about the Juneteenth holiday, reportedly calling it “Coonteenth.” This comment reportedly shocked both Lowe and his colleagues, given that the holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
The lawsuit further details claims about the workplace culture on ‘Matlock’, with Lowe asserting that he was coerced into performing personal errands for Urman, including pet care, under the impression that his job security was at stake. He also accused producers of permitting inappropriate remarks and behaviors toward staff members.
Among the allegations is a claim regarding comments made by executive producer Nicki Renna about actor Eme Ikwuakor. Lowe contends that Renna made a racially and sexually inappropriate remark about the actor during a workplace discussion, which he found to be deeply offensive and unrelated to Ikwuakor’s professional work.
CBS has responded to these allegations, stating that the company conducted an investigation into Lowe’s concerns prior to the lawsuit being filed. In their statement, the network emphasized, “We are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for everyone and take all workplace complaints seriously. In this instance, a thorough investigation was completed, and we were unable to find support for his allegations. We look forward to vigorously defending this lawsuit.”
Lowe’s complaint not only addresses alleged comments but also scrutinizes how his concerns were managed after he reported them. He claims he was let go from the series in July 2025 after bringing these issues to light.

Since its premiere in 2024, ‘Matlock’ has been a significant success for CBS. This modern revival of the original legal drama, which starred Andy Griffith from 1986 to 1995, features Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a retired attorney who returns to practice and tackles high-profile cases.
This lawsuit is not the first controversy surrounding the show. Previously, actor David Del Rio exited the series following an investigation into a sexual assault allegation, which reportedly led to his removal from the production.
The latest lawsuit presents another hurdle for the CBS drama as the network prepares to defend itself against Lowe’s allegations. The case remains active, and the claims have yet to be substantiated in court. CBS has denied the allegations and intends to contest the lawsuit.
