Robert Downey Jr. Confirms Avengers: Doomsday Addresses Marvel’s Post-Endgame Issues
Robert Downey Jr. is keeping many details about ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ under wraps, but he is optimistic that Marvel fans will be pleased with what the film has to offer. In a recent interview with CBR alongside director Joe Russo, Downey shared his insights on the upcoming movie, which marks his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a completely new role.
After more than a decade as Iron Man, Downey is now taking on the character of Doctor Doom, one of Marvel’s iconic villains. While he refrained from revealing major plot points, he hinted that the film has discovered a way to tackle one of the most significant challenges Marvel faces following the monumental success of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
Discussing the project, Downey remarked, “And it’s not even about how I executed it. It’s about the way it’s been structured, and the other characters. There’s something going on in ‘Doomsday’ and forward that is literally the only antidote to: How do you not have these films be let down after an ‘Infinity War’ and an ‘Endgame?’ And boy, have we labored long and hard to bring that down.”
Though Downey did not specify what that “antidote” entails, his comments imply that Marvel is diligently crafting a narrative that can meet the high expectations set by its most successful films.
Joe Russo also expressed his enthusiasm for the film during the interview. The director noted that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will present something distinct from previous Marvel offerings. Russo stated that the movie is filled with surprises and adopts a more profound emotional approach than fans might anticipate.
He elaborated, “There are a lot of surprises. I think [‘Doomsday’] is the most emotionally complex of all of them. And in a lot of ways, the most mature of all of them.”
Since the release of ‘Endgame’ in 2019, Marvel has experienced a mixed reception. While some projects have become major successes, others have struggled to resonate with audiences. Films like ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ have performed well and generated excitement among fans, while titles such as ‘The Marvels’ and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ received a less enthusiastic response.
This uneven trajectory has led many fans to question whether Marvel can recapture the heights achieved during the Infinity Saga. Downey believes that the team behind ‘Doomsday’ is well aware of these concerns and has invested considerable effort into crafting a story that meets audience expectations.
During his conversation with CBR, he also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return to the Marvel universe. Downey stated, “There’s an incredible amount of gratitude we have going into these two. One epic at a time. ‘Doomsday’… just the gratitude to be able to do it. To still be engaging with people who are critical when we fall short, but who understand how difficult it is when we get it right.”
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on December 18. As Marvel gears up for another significant chapter, fans will soon discover whether the studio has truly found a way to recapture the excitement that made ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ monumental events.
