Netflix Cancels ‘The Boroughs’ After One Season Despite 97% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Netflix has announced that it will not proceed with a second season of ‘The Boroughs’, bringing the sci-fi series to an unexpected end after just one season. This decision comes shortly after the show’s premiere in May 2026, leaving many fans shocked as they anticipated a continuation.
As reported by Deadline, there were initial discussions about renewing the series. Sources indicated that a writers’ room for Season 2 had been established, a typical step for major productions. There were even preliminary conversations about filming both a second and third season consecutively. However, those plans shifted when the show’s performance did not align with Netflix’s expectations.
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, ‘The Boroughs’ was executive produced by Matt and Ross Duffer, known for their work on ‘Stranger Things’. The series debuted shortly after the final season of ‘Stranger Things’, prompting viewers to draw comparisons between the two. With its supernatural elements and mystery-driven narrative, some fans likened it to a version of ‘Stranger Things’ featuring older characters.
Set in a retirement community, the story follows a group of seniors who uncover a strange and perilous threat. They must unite to combat an otherworldly force that seeks to take away their most precious resource: time. This unique premise garnered strong critical acclaim, with many praising the cast and the show’s fresh approach to the sci-fi genre.
The series boasted a talented ensemble cast, including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, Bill Pullman, Jena Malone, Carlos Miranda, Seth Numrich, and Alice Kremelberg. Ben Taylor directed several episodes, including the pilot.
While critics responded positively to ‘The Boroughs’, audience metrics told a different story. According to Deadline, the show attracted 5.6 million views during its opening weekend, which increased to 9.5 million views in the following week, indicating growing interest. However, this momentum was short-lived, as viewership plummeted to 3.7 million in its third week.

This decline raised concerns about the show’s potential to cultivate a larger audience over time. Given that Netflix often weighs viewership against production costs in its renewal decisions, these numbers likely influenced the cancellation.
Additionally, ‘The Boroughs’ was an expensive production, relying heavily on visual effects and featuring a large cast of well-known actors, which further increased its costs. Consequently, Netflix likely anticipated stronger viewership to justify future seasons.
Timing may have also played a role in the cancellation. The series launched shortly after the emotional conclusion of ‘Stranger Things’, one of Netflix’s flagship shows. According to Deadline, audience fatigue could have been a factor, especially since ‘The Boroughs’ was the second supernatural series from the Duffer Brothers to debut this year.
With the cancellation confirmed, ‘The Boroughs’ joins a growing list of Netflix shows that have ended after just one season. Despite receiving positive reviews and generating initial interest, this sci-fi drama will not continue beyond its first chapter.
