Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key’s ‘Police Academy’ Reboot Canceled Due to Cultural Shifts
A new ‘Police Academy’ movie featuring Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key was once in the works, but the project seems to have quietly vanished. Comedian and actor Ike Barinholtz revealed that the reboot was ultimately abandoned as real-world events made the concept of a police comedy feel inappropriate to pursue.
Barinholtz discussed the project during an episode of the “Funny You Ask with Ike Barinholtz” podcast, sharing insights about the long-standing effort to revive the franchise. The new film had been in development at New Line Cinema for several years, with Peele and Key attached to star and produce.
The initial vision was to create a modern, more adult-oriented version of ‘Police Academy.’ Barinholtz explained that he and his writing partner David Stassen were brought on to rewrite the script, aiming for a darker and more mature tone akin to the original film.
“Years ago, my partner and I got hired to rewrite ‘Police Academy’ for New Line Cinema,” Barinholtz said. “They told us, ‘We want you guys to write it and make it dirty, rated R, modern.’”
However, the project encountered hurdles during its development. Barinholtz noted that the original creator of the franchise participated in meetings and often resisted changes, insisting that the new film stay true to the style of the original movies.
According to Barinholtz, the creator wanted to bring back original cast members, despite some having already passed away. He recounted a moment when Stassen mentioned several classic characters during a pitch, only to realize that some of the actors were no longer alive.
“He was not happy,” Barinholtz said, reflecting on the reactions during those meetings.
The most significant issue arose in 2014 following the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Brown was killed by police officer Darren Wilson, sparking nationwide protests and discussions about police conduct and race relations.
Barinholtz mentioned that the team ultimately felt the timing was no longer suitable for a comedy centered around police officers, particularly one featuring Peele and Key.
“More importantly, as we were developing the film, Mike Brown got shot and all of a sudden—and we were making the movie for Key and Peele, and people were like, ‘We’re not making a cop comedy right now where we’re having these two hilarious Black actors play police officers,’” Barinholtz explained.
The comments indicate that the project was shelved due to the evolving cultural conversation surrounding law enforcement. While New Line Cinema has not officially confirmed the cancellation of the reboot, there have been no significant updates regarding the film in recent years.

The effort to revive ‘Police Academy’ has spanned over two decades. The original franchise began in 1984, with Steve Guttenberg leading the cast as Carey Mahoney. The first film became an unexpected hit, leading to six sequels released between 1986 and 1994, along with animated and live-action television adaptations.
Numerous attempts have been made to bring the franchise back over the years, but none have progressed to production. In 2018, Guttenberg expressed that another movie was still a possibility, suggesting he could reprise his role as Mahoney.
For now, the future of ‘Police Academy’ remains uncertain. While the franchise still has a dedicated fanbase, the version involving Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key seems unlikely to materialize after years of development.
