John Cena Unsure About Peacemaker’s Return to the DCU and Shares His Thoughts
John Cena is eager to don the helmet once more, but he honestly admits he has no idea when that will happen.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com on X, the actor discussed the future of ‘Peacemaker’ in the DC Universe following the character’s exit at the end of season two and a significant timeline update. He stated that any specific information about his next appearance would be mere “personal speculation” and redirected the inquiry to James Gunn.
These remarks came as Cena promoted his new Netflix film ‘Little Brother.’ He told ComicBook that he has yet to receive any direct communication from Gunn regarding what lies ahead for Christopher Smith in the broader DCU. His response, refreshingly candid and self-aware, stands out as one of the most honest statements from a superhero actor about their franchise future in recent times.
This transparency is crucial considering how ‘Peacemaker’ wrapped up. Season two ended with Rick Flag Sr. throwing Christopher Smith through a portal into a dimension called Salvation, a wild conclusion that clearly aimed to set up future storylines rather than end the character’s journey.
Gunn himself confirmed to CBR that a third season is not currently planned, though he was careful not to dismiss it entirely. “This is about the wider DCU, and other stories in which this will play out right now,” the DC Studios co-head explained. “That doesn’t mean that there won’t be a third season of ‘Peacemaker.’ I don’t want to never say never. But, right now, no. This is about the future of the DCU, and ‘Peacemaker’ is an important character.”
Gunn had previously humorously declined to confirm Peacemaker’s next appearance, stating he knew the answer but couldn’t share it “under penalty of the Safran punishment,” joking that Peter Safran uses a cigar cutter to take a joint from his finger every time he reveals a plot detail.
There has been no official announcement regarding Cena’s appearance in the upcoming ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ Gunn’s next DCU theatrical film, though it remains a possibility given how central the character has been to the universe’s early chapters. Peacemaker’s season two served as both a direct sequel to ‘Superman’ and a prequel to ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ positioning the character as a vital link between major DCU installments.

At Spacecon earlier this year, Cena paid a heartfelt tribute to the role and the people involved, expressing that bringing ‘Peacemaker’ to life “under the mentorship of a brilliant storyteller like James Gunn” was something he deeply valued, and he misses his castmates, hoping they can “get back together soon.”
For now, the helmet remains on the shelf. However, given how intentionally Gunn has integrated the character into the DCU’s ongoing narrative, it seems increasingly unlikely that Peacemaker will sit out the next phase for long.
