The ‘Game of Thrones’ universe has the potential to delve into a unique aspect of House Targaryen. Ryan Condal, the creative force behind ‘House of the Dragon’, has unveiled an intriguing idea for a potential spin-off that would center on the iconic family in a world devoid of the dragons that once made them formidable.

In a conversation with Total Film, Condal explored the vast storytelling opportunities still available within George R.R. Martin’s universe. While dragons have always been a significant element of the Targaryen narrative, he believes there’s a fascinating future for a series where the family must navigate their rule without these mythical creatures.

“I think there’s a real opportunity to see a story where the Targaryens… don’t have their dragons anymore. Where the Targaryens are still ruling, and like, how do you pursue rule? That seems like an interesting place,” Condal expressed.

This concept would provide a fresh perspective on the family. For centuries, the Targaryens wielded their dragons as symbols of power and intimidation. Their mastery over these colossal beings enabled them to conquer Westeros and maintain their grip on the Iron Throne.

Without dragons, the family would need to rely on alternative skills. A series based on this premise could emphasize political intrigue, complex alliances, betrayals, and the ongoing struggle to retain control over the kingdom.

Condal’s vision is distinct from the upcoming series ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, which also examines a time when dragons are no longer integral to Targaryen life. This new series follows young Prince Aegon “Egg” Targaryen and his adventures alongside Ser Duncan the Tall, one of Westeros’ most legendary knights.

However, a narrative centered on “Targaryens without dragons” could explore an entirely different era. One potential backdrop could be the aftermath of the Dance of the Dragons, a time when the Targaryen dynasty was weakened and their most potent weapon had vanished.

This period could reveal a side of Westeros that fans have seldom witnessed. Rather than focusing on epic battles and dragon confrontations, the story could center on rulers striving to preserve their family’s legacy through strategy and political maneuvering.

Condal also indicated that the world crafted by George R.R. Martin is rich with untold stories. He likened the original ‘Game of Thrones’ series to merely a fraction of what the universe has to offer.

“The richness of this world is just that in ‘Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’… maybe ‘Game of Thrones’ was the 1%,” Condal remarked.

The success of ‘House of the Dragon’ has already demonstrated that viewers are eager to explore different facets of Westeros. While the original ‘Game of Thrones’ concentrated on wars, kings, and grand conflicts, future series could adopt a more measured approach, examining various families, time periods, and storytelling styles.

A series focusing on the Targaryens after losing their dragons could provide a refreshing perspective on the franchise. Instead of allowing powerful creatures to dictate the fate of kingdoms, the narrative would shift to human choices, ambition, and the tough decisions necessary to maintain power.

For now, Condal’s concept remains a mere possibility, but it highlights that the ‘Game of Thrones’ world still has ample room for expansion.
