Although ‘The Way Home’ has officially concluded after four seasons, fans are left with numerous questions about the potential directions the story could have taken. Executive producers Heather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke have shared their original concepts for a possible Season 5.

In a conversation with TV Insider, the mother-daughter duo revealed that they had always envisioned more stories for the Landry family. While the Season 4 finale provided a sense of closure, it was also crafted to leave the possibility open for further adventures.

One significant storyline they contemplated was the fate of Elliot. The finale indicated that Elliot (Evan Williams) survived a past shooting, ultimately returning home and getting engaged to Kat (Chyler Leigh). However, Clarke mentioned that if the show had been renewed for another season, they likely would have ended Season 4 on a much more dramatic cliffhanger.

“I think if we’d had a Season 5, we would have ended Season 4 on is he alive or is he dead versus what we had to do,” Clarke explained. She added that the idea of killing Elliot was never seriously considered, as it would have altered the emotional trajectory of the narrative.

The series finale also wrapped up several character arcs. Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) was seen moving toward her future and a potential romance with Max (Dale Whibley). Del (Andie MacDowell) found peace and was ready to further her relationship with Sam (Rob Stewart). Jacob (Spencer MacPherson) married Abby (Holly Deveaux), while the mystery surrounding KC (Vaughan Murrae) and the future remained integral to the show’s overarching story.

If Season 5 had come to fruition, the creators indicated they would have concentrated more on these relationships rather than introducing entirely new storylines. Conkie expressed a desire to delve deeper into Jacob and Abby’s relationship, as well as to spend more time exploring Alice and Max’s connection. She also wanted to see the future for Kat and Elliot following their engagement.

“I would have loved to have spent more time with the Jacob love story, see it grow a little more. And I would have loved to have spent a little more time with the Max Alice love story, and, of course, the Elliot Kat story,” Conkie shared.

Clarke also shared her interest in exploring the narrative of Griffin and Tessa, including the aftermath of their time jump and Tessa’s evolution into the character fans recognize.

The creators noted that one of the most challenging aspects of concluding the series was deciding which stories to leave untold. There were numerous characters and time periods they wished to explore, including younger versions of Rita and other members of the Landry family.

However, Clarke expressed pride in what the team achieved with the final season. Looking ahead, the producers also envisioned where the characters would be after the finale. Conkie believes Alice would continue pursuing her dreams and achieve success, while Kat and Elliot would build a joyful life together.

Clarke envisioned the family continuing to visit the pond, but with a transformed relationship with it. Instead of being shrouded in secrets and pain, the pond would evolve into a place of understanding and appreciation.

“I think they’re going down to that pond. I just don’t think that will ever go away,” Clarke noted. She also suggested that Kat could take on the role of preserving the family’s history, documenting everything they learned about the pond and their past.

Although Season 5 never materialized, the creators believe the conclusion still provided fans with the essential elements they sought: answers, emotional closure, and hope for the future.

For Clarke and Conkie, the most significant indicator of the show’s success was the profound connection fans had with it. They mentioned that many viewers reached out to share how ‘The Way Home’ helped them navigate through challenging times, from grief to loneliness.

While the Landrys’ journey may have concluded on screen, the creators emphasized that this world still holds countless stories yet to be told.
