More than 25 years after the release of ‘The Object of My Affection’, Stephen Baldwin is sharing insights about his brief time on the romantic comedy and the reasons he claims led to his removal from the project.

Baldwin asserts that the explanation he received had nothing to do with his acting skills. Instead, he alleges that producers felt he was overshadowing Jennifer Aniston in their scenes together.

During a discussion on his podcast, One Bad Movie with Stephen Baldwin, alongside comedian T.J. Miller, the actor reflected on his experience with the film prior to his exit. Baldwin mentioned that he was already in the midst of filming when a producer approached him with concerns.

According to Baldwin, the producer remarked that he could not be funnier than Aniston in the movie. Initially, Baldwin thought this comment was made in jest, considering the film’s romantic comedy genre.

“I don’t know. This isn’t to shred anybody. This is just simply to say ‘Hollywood is Hollywood,’” Baldwin stated while discussing the situation.

At the time of his departure, reports indicated that there were creative disagreements regarding his role. Baldwin was initially cast as Vince McBride, a significant character in the film. Following his exit, the role ultimately went to Paul Rudd, who starred alongside Aniston in the completed version.

During the podcast, Miller noted that Aniston is well-known for her comedic talent and suggested she likely was not the source of the complaint. Baldwin concurred, stating he never discovered the origin of the note.

Baldwin also drew parallels between this experience and another early career moment. He recalled working on the 1989 war drama ‘Casualties of War’ with Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn, where he claimed he was asked to tone down his performance before eventually being let go. In hindsight, he wondered if aspects like his appearance or weight played a role.

Despite the controversy surrounding his exit, ‘The Object of My Affection’ became a significant film for both Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd.

Released in 1998 and based on Stephen McCauley’s novel, the film narrates the story of Nina, a pregnant social worker who develops deep feelings for her gay best friend George. At the time, it distinguished itself from many mainstream romantic comedies by exploring themes of friendship, love, and family in a more unconventional manner.

While critical responses were mixed upon its release, the film has garnered a loyal following over the years. Many viewers have praised its emotional storytelling and its willingness to address subjects that were less common in major studio romantic comedies of the late 1990s. The movie is also remembered as one of the earliest collaborations between Aniston and Rudd, who would later become two of Hollywood’s most recognizable figures.

Today, ‘The Object of My Affection’ remains a notable part of late-1990s romantic comedy history. Baldwin’s recent comments have reignited interest in the film, prompting fans to revisit a behind-the-scenes story that has largely remained untold for decades.
