Sarah Shahi Reflects on Memorable ‘Sopranos’ Scene With James Gandolfini
Sarah Shahi is reminiscing about one of her standout moments from ‘The Sopranos,’ featuring the late James Gandolfini. In a recent appearance on the ‘Bossticks’ podcast, she discussed her guest role on the iconic HBO crime series and the intimate scenes she shared with Gandolfini, who portrayed the legendary mob boss Tony Soprano.
Shahi, who appeared in the show’s sixth season in 2007, expressed her surprise at the strong chemistry she experienced with Gandolfini during their scenes. “I did a sex scene with Tony Soprano,” she revealed on the podcast, adding, “One of the best, I have to say, kisses I’ve ever had.”
Initially, Shahi was uncertain about how to approach a romantic scene with Gandolfini, known more for his tough and intimidating roles than for traditional romantic leads.
“I remember thinking to myself, ‘How am I going to get turned on by this 47-year-old large, balding man?’ There’s nothing… how is this going to work for me? Oh boy, did it work for me!” she recalled.
Shahi noted that Gandolfini’s commitment to his craft made their scenes feel more authentic. She described him as a dedicated performer who paid meticulous attention to detail, even in unusual moments.
One memorable scene involved their characters taking mushrooms. According to Shahi, Gandolfini insisted on using props that felt genuine and requested small details to enhance their reactions during filming.
“He’s a very method actor. So, he wanted props,” Shahi explained, noting that the team used fake mushrooms with added flavor to elicit natural reactions from the actors.
Shahi also shared a humorous behind-the-scenes anecdote from filming. She recalled a scene where she sat on Gandolfini’s lap, and the two characters kissed after consuming the mushrooms.
According to Shahi, their chemistry persisted even after the director called for a break.
“When they called ‘cut,’ we were still kissing… we were still kissing,” she said. “We did it three, four times and every time they would call ‘cut’ and we’re still making out.”
In ‘The Sopranos,’ Shahi portrayed Sonya Aragon, a college student and stripper who becomes involved with Tony Soprano following the death of Christopher Moltisanti’s father-in-law. Her character appears in the episode “Kennedy and Heidi,” which follows Tony as he navigates a strange emotional journey after a tragic event.
This episode is noted for its unusual blend of crime drama and surreal storytelling as Tony grapples with guilt, grief, and personal reflection.
Gandolfini’s portrayal of Tony Soprano is widely regarded as one of the greatest performances in television history. His work helped elevate the HBO series to monumental success and transformed audience perceptions of TV dramas. He passed away in 2013 at the age of 51 due to a heart attack.

For Shahi, this experience remains a cherished chapter in her career. Her reflections highlight the respect she has for Gandolfini and the unforgettable moments they shared on the groundbreaking series.
