‘House of the Dragon’ season 3 has finally introduced one of the most significant missing Targaryen characters into the narrative. While the episode centers on the escalating conflict between the Greens and the Blacks, it subtly brought in Prince Daeron Targaryen, the youngest child of Alicent Hightower and King Viserys I.

This reveal occurred in the season 3 premiere, titled “Salt and Sea, Fire and Blood.” Daeron was not presented with a grand announcement or dramatic scene. Instead, he was placed in the background alongside a formidable new Hightower figure, allowing fans to uncover his identity.

The character made his appearance while Ormund Hightower, portrayed by James Norton, arrived with his forces. Ormund, who heads House Hightower and is a cousin of Alicent and Gwayne, made a strong impression with his armor, green cloak, and commanding presence.

However, viewers quickly recognized that another significant character was standing beside him. A young red-haired man seen near Ormund turned out to be Daeron Targaryen, played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. Fans swiftly pieced together the clues and realized that the show had already introduced the missing prince.

Daeron’s introduction also included another significant detail. His dragon Tessarion was briefly shown during the episode. The appearance of the blue dragon confirmed that the young man accompanying the Hightower army was not merely another servant or soldier, but one of Alicent’s sons.

In George R.R. Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood’, Daeron plays a crucial role during the Dance of the Dragons. Unlike his older brothers Aegon II and Aemond, Daeron is characterized as more humble and gentle. He was sent to Oldtown at a young age, where he became a squire under Ormund Hightower.

‘House of the Dragon’ seems to be following a similar trajectory. The young prince remains connected to Ormund, which explains why he is traveling with the Hightower forces instead of being with his family in King’s Landing.

The introduction of Daeron could prove to be extremely significant for the future of the series. With Aegon’s situation uncertain and Aemond forging his own path, Daeron may emerge as a key figure for the Greens. His presence provides Alicent’s side with another potential leader in the struggle against Rhaenyra Targaryen.

The show may also be altering some aspects of Daeron’s appearance and role. In the books, Daeron possesses the traditional silver hair associated with the Targaryens, but the series has given him a more Hightower-like appearance with red hair. This could be a strategy to help him blend in while remaining out of the spotlight.

The episode also hints that Ormund may be trying to safeguard Daeron. Keeping him away from danger and concealing his significance could become a major aspect of the character’s storyline. If the Greens lose their other options, Daeron could emerge as one of their strongest hopes.

While ‘House of the Dragon’ did not make a significant announcement regarding his arrival, Daeron’s understated introduction could turn out to be one of the most pivotal moments of season 3. The missing Targaryen prince has finally made his entrance into the story, and his role in the conflict is just beginning.
