Joe Manganiello Reveals Health Struggles in Upcoming Memoir ‘Bloodlines’
Joe Manganiello is candidly discussing one of the most challenging times in his life, sharing that he endured years of serious health issues that nearly altered his path. The actor, recognized for his roles in ‘True Blood’, ‘Magic Mike’, and as Deathstroke in the DC universe, delves into his experiences in his forthcoming memoir ‘Bloodlines’.
The book’s synopsis indicates that Manganiello battled a range of autoimmune-related illnesses impacting various parts of his body. He disclosed that these conditions targeted his thyroid, digestive system, skin, lungs, and eyes, leading to a prolonged and arduous medical journey.
This seven-year ordeal reportedly involved ongoing pain, uncertainty, and a significant medical procedure that the memoir describes as a “life-saving organ amputation.” Manganiello noted that doctors struggled to diagnose his issues, prompting him to seek answers on his own.
In a statement shared with People, the actor reflected on this period as one of the toughest challenges he has ever encountered. “It was the most brutally difficult time of my life, one I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, but also my greatest adventure,” Manganiello remarked.
As conventional medical solutions became elusive, Manganiello explored various avenues to comprehend his condition. His memoir reveals that he engaged in personal research, spirituality, family history, and alternative practices during his quest for healing.
Part of this exploration involved delving into his ancestry, where he uncovered stories about his family’s past. Manganiello learned about relatives who survived the Armenian genocide and others who faced significant health challenges, which helped him connect his own journey to a broader family narrative.
He shared that this process transformed his perspective on his suffering. Writing ‘Bloodlines’ provided him with a new lens through which to view his experiences and understand how they shaped him.
“I hope that what I went through on this journey can give readers hope that answers and healing may lie for them on the other side of whatever they are fighting through,” Manganiello expressed in his statement to People.
He added that the writing process allowed him to view the difficult years differently. “The process of writing this book gave me the gift of perspective that helped me to see that my suffering was a cocoon from which I would emerge forever changed,” he noted.
While fans recognize Manganiello as an actor who often portrays strong and physically demanding characters, including the villain Deathstroke in the DC Extended Universe, he revealed that his most significant battle occurred off-screen.
Throughout his career, the actor has continued to work and has remained in the public eye for his personal life. He was previously married to actress Sofía Vergara from 2015 until their divorce in 2024 and is now engaged to Caitlin O’Connor after proposing in 2025.
Manganiello’s memoir ‘Bloodlines’ is anticipated to provide fans with a deeper insight into his personal journey, including the health challenges that have shaped his life. The book is set to be released on October 13 and will share more about the actor’s struggles, recovery, and the lessons he has learned along the way.
