Emilia Clarke’s ‘Ponies’ Canceled After One Season Despite 94% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Emilia Clarke’s latest television endeavor has come to an unexpected conclusion. Peacock has officially canceled the Cold War spy thriller ‘Ponies’ after just one season, despite the series receiving strong reviews from critics and acclaim for the performances of its two leads.
The series debuted on Peacock with all eight episodes released on January 15. Blending espionage drama, mystery, and character-driven storytelling, ‘Ponies’ followed two women who were drawn into the perilous world of intelligence after a personal tragedy altered their lives forever.
Set in Moscow in 1977, the show centered on Bea and Twila, two American Embassy secretaries deemed “persons of no interest” by intelligence agencies. Their lives took a dramatic turn after their husbands died under mysterious circumstances, prompting them to become CIA operatives in search of the truth behind these events.
Emilia Clarke portrayed Bea, a highly educated Russian-speaking woman with ties to Soviet immigrants, while Haley Lu Richardson played Twila, a courageous small-town woman with a contrasting personality. Their unlikely partnership became the heart of the series.
According to Variety, the cancellation comes despite the show garnering mostly positive reactions from critics. The series achieved a 94% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers praising its performances, storyline, and the chemistry between Clarke and Richardson.
Rotten Tomatoes later listed the series with a 96% approval score based on 28 critic reviews. The critics’ consensus described ‘Ponies’ as a narrative that intertwines friendship and espionage, stating it “gradually achieves full gallop thanks to Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson’s tag-team charisma.”
However, positive reviews were not sufficient to secure a second season. Peacock typically does not disclose detailed viewing figures for its shows, making it challenging to assess the series’ performance. Variety reported that ‘Ponies’ did not make it onto Nielsen’s streaming top 10 charts following its release, which likely influenced the cancellation decision.

The show featured a robust supporting cast that included Adrian Lester, Artjom Gilz, Nicholas Podany, Petro Ninovskyi, and Vic Michaelis. Behind the scenes, ‘Ponies’ was created by David Iserson and Susanna Fogel, with Iserson serving as co-showrunner and Fogel directing several episodes.
Produced by Universal Television, the series included several seasoned producers, such as Mike Daniels, Jessica Rhoades, and Emilia Clarke herself as an executive producer. The creative team developed the show around the concept of two very different women becoming unlikely partners during one of the most tense periods of the Cold War.
For Clarke, this role provided another opportunity to showcase a different aspect of her acting range after achieving global fame as Daenerys Targaryen in ‘Game of Thrones’. Richardson also garnered attention for infusing a fresh energy into her role following her performances in projects like ‘The White Lotus’.
Critics highlighted the relationship between the two actresses as one of the show’s greatest strengths. Variety praised their connection, calling their chemistry the “glue that binds the whole enterprise together.” Other reviews noted that the series allowed both actors to move beyond the types of characters audiences typically associated with them.
While ‘Ponies’ will not return, the show leaves behind a strong critical response and a memorable pairing between Clarke and Richardson. For fans who enjoyed the eight-episode spy narrative, the first season now stands as the complete journey of Bea and Twila’s dangerous mission.
