Jordan Belfort’s narrative is set to be reexamined in ‘The Real Wolf of Wall Street’, a three-part docuseries that aims to uncover a more sinister aspect of the man who inspired Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed film ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’.

Paramount+ has unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming series, which revisits the rise and fall of Belfort, the former stockbroker notorious for his leadership at Stratton Oakmont before his conviction for financial crimes. While Scorsese’s 2013 film depicted Belfort’s extravagant lifestyle, the new documentary asserts that the actual events were even more outrageous.

The trailer features individuals connected to Belfort’s saga questioning the accuracy of the Hollywood portrayal. One interviewee states, “A lot of the movie was bulls—,” while another claims, “The Wolf of Wall Street doesn’t even accurately portray the level of insanity that occurred.”

The documentary will delve into the environment surrounding Belfort, including his company, his criminal activities, and the impact on those affected by his actions. According to Paramount+, the series will feature never-before-seen footage, thousands of internal FBI documents, archival interviews, and fresh conversations with individuals from Belfort’s inner circle.

Among the key figures featured in the project is Nadine, Belfort’s former wife. The series will explore her experiences and how her relationship with Belfort evolved as his success spiraled into chaos.

The official description for ‘The Real Wolf of Wall Street’ indicates that the documentary will unveil “the explosive true story of Belfort’s meteoric rise, his stunning fall and those he left stranded in his wake.”

The release of the series reignites the ongoing debate surrounding Scorsese’s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’. The 2013 film was a massive hit, grossing over $400 million worldwide and earning five Oscar nominations, including Best Director for Martin Scorsese and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio.

DiCaprio’s portrayal of Belfort received widespread acclaim, with many viewers captivated by his depiction of a character who was both charming and deeply flawed. Entertainment Weekly even ranked it among the best performances of DiCaprio’s career.

However, the film has also faced scrutiny regarding whether it adequately condemned Belfort’s actions or glamorized his lifestyle. While it showcased his drug use, illegal financial schemes, and treatment of women, some viewers contended that the film’s humor and energy made the criminal lifestyle seem alluring.

DiCaprio himself reflected on the experience of portraying Belfort after winning a Golden Globe for the role. “Making movies is an interesting process,” he noted. “You put your entire life on hold. And these characters really do envelop you, for better or for worse. So, thank God none of the attributes of this character rubbed off on my real life, because I probably wouldn’t be standing here today.”

Now, ‘The Real Wolf of Wall Street’ seeks to present a different viewpoint on Belfort’s story. The series will revisit the events behind one of Hollywood’s most contentious crime films and investigate whether the real-life narrative was even more unbelievable than what audiences witnessed on screen.

‘The Real Wolf of Wall Street’ premieres July 14 on Paramount+.
