Zendaya Could Replace Matt Damon as the New Face of the ‘Bourne’ Franchise
The ‘Bourne’ franchise might be on the verge of a significant transformation, as recent reports suggest that Zendaya could step in as the next leading star of this iconic spy series.
Over the years, the ‘Jason Bourne’ films have explored various directions. While 2007’s ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ was perceived as the conclusion of Matt Damon’s journey as the renowned secret agent, the franchise has since ventured into spinoffs, a Damon-led return, and even a television prequel series. Despite the 2016 film ‘Jason Bourne’ not achieving the revival Universal anticipated, the studio continues to seek fresh ways to reinvigorate the series.
The latest speculation comes from entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider via his newsletter The InSneider. According to Sneider, Zendaya has reportedly been in talks with Universal about taking over the franchise as its new lead. However, this information remains unverified, and a Universal spokesperson has denied any truth to the claim.
If the rumor proves accurate, Zendaya’s portrayal of Bourne would signify a complete reboot of the franchise. Sneider suggests that the actress might play a female spy grappling with amnesia, akin to Matt Damon’s original character, Jason Bourne, who awoke with no recollection of his past while being pursued by formidable foes.
Currently, there are no confirmed details regarding a director, writer, or production timeline for this potential reboot. Given that the project is still merely a rumor, fans may have to wait some time before learning if Zendaya will officially join the franchise.

Nevertheless, the prospect of Zendaya leading a major action franchise is certainly within reach. The actress has risen to become one of Hollywood’s top stars through roles in films like ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Dune’. She has also demonstrated her versatility in smaller projects, showcasing her ability to handle both blockbuster hits and more nuanced performances.
A new ‘Bourne’ film could provide Zendaya with the opportunity to spearhead her own franchise rather than merely playing a supporting role. Taking on the mantle of a spy would enable her to delve into a different type of action hero while potentially allowing her to take on a producer role behind the scenes.
The timing could also align well for Universal. Zendaya has several major projects on the horizon, including ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, ‘The Odyssey’, and ‘Dune: Part Three’, but her schedule may become more flexible afterward. The studio already has established connections with her through other upcoming ventures, which could facilitate a future collaboration.
However, embarking on a full reboot could be a risky endeavor. Many contemporary audiences prefer interconnected narratives and legacy sequels that build upon previous films rather than starting anew. The ‘Bourne’ franchise has previously explored the idea of replacing Damon with 2012’s ‘The Bourne Legacy’, which starred Jeremy Renner as a new character. That film received mixed reviews and did not establish the long-term future Universal desired, leading to Damon’s return in ‘Jason Bourne’.
For now, Zendaya’s potential involvement remains speculative, but the possibility has already sparked considerable conversation among fans. Should Universal decide to revamp the ‘Bourne’ franchise around a new star, Zendaya could infuse a fresh style and renewed energy into the realm of international espionage.
