Few films in recent memory have maintained the theatrical momentum that the Michael Jackson biopic is currently experiencing worldwide. What started as a scrutinized passion project has evolved into one of the year’s defining box office narratives, with the film consistently delivering impressive numbers that defy conventional release patterns.

A significant portion of this staying power is attributed to international markets, with overseas earnings making up more than half of the film’s total global revenue. Russia has emerged as a particularly intriguing chapter in this story, especially as the film enjoys an extended theatrical run there.

According to the latest tracking data from Russia and the CIS region, ‘Michael’ recorded a remarkably strong performance on June 29, earning $268,000 while only dropping 20 percent compared to the previous week. Such resilience, especially more than a month after its release, indicates that the film continues to attract steady audiences rather than fading after its initial weeks.

With 33 days now in release across Russian theaters, ‘Michael’ has boosted its total regional gross to $22.1 million, which translates to approximately 1.605 billion rubles and nearly three million admissions. Including neighboring Belarus, that figure increases to around $22.76 million, while the broader CIS total, encompassing all surrounding countries, approaches 1.953 billion rubles, or about $26.81 million.

This total has already secured the film a spot at number 32 on the region’s all-time box office chart, a remarkable feat for a biopic that faced considerable critical skepticism upon its release. The film’s ability to continue expanding its reach this far into its run sets it apart from most wide releases, which typically experience significant drop-offs by this stage.

‘Michael’ was not the only film to post notable numbers that Monday, as ‘Son of a Rich 3’ earned $212,000 despite a steeper 26 percent weekly decline, bringing its cumulative total to $10.28 million after 19 days in theaters. Meanwhile, A24’s horror release ‘Backrooms’ continued its strong performance, earning $102,000 with a 40 percent drop, approaching $9.61 million after 26 days, a total that positions it to surpass ‘The Drama’ and become the studio’s biggest release in the Russian market.

Newer entries also made their mark on the chart, with ‘Three Heroes Daily Tales 3’ and ‘Unpacking’ debuting with respectable Monday figures of $85,000 and $72,000, respectively, after only five days in release. Further down the list, ‘Obsession’ continued its extended run with $68,000 on a modest 17 percent decline, reaching a regional total of $5.45 million after 40 days in theaters.

A 20 percent week-to-week drop on a Monday this far into a theatrical run is a strong indicator for any film, especially one that has been in theaters for over a month. This suggests that word of mouth is still driving new ticket sales, even as the initial wave of curiosity-driven moviegoers has long since passed through.

Combined with the film’s ongoing success in markets like Australia, South Korea, and the Middle East, Russia’s continued strength underscores the extensive cultural impact Michael Jackson retains internationally. For a film that critics approached with caution, the commercial narrative on the ground continues to tell a very different story.
