The finale of ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ season 4 concluded with one of the series’ most poignant moments, leaving fans reeling after a major character’s fate altered the team’s future forever. Members of Critical Role are now sharing insights about this heartbreaking decision and its significant implications as they move into season 5.

This shocking event unfolded during the season 4 finale, titled “The Ascension,” where Vox Machina confronted The Whispered One. After a perilous battle, the group believed they had vanquished their formidable foe, but their victory quickly spiraled into a nightmare.

The Whispered One reemerged, more powerful than ever, and demanded that Vox Machina submit to his rule. While most of the team had no choice but to yield to protect the world, Liam O’Brien’s Vax stood firm and refused to kneel. As a consequence, The Whispered One annihilated Vax in front of his comrades, leaving the entire group shattered.

Prior to this moment, the season had hinted at Vax’s potential fate. Earlier episodes depicted Grog enduring a brutal assault after being cast into the perilous realm of Thar Amphala. Although he survived thanks to The Whispered One’s intervention, this scenario created a significant conflict for Pike, who was tempted to assist the villain.

The emotional climax of the finale was not a spur-of-the-moment decision. In a conversation with ScreenRant, Liam O’Brien and Laura Bailey revealed that Vax’s death had been a long-planned narrative element. O’Brien noted that the team revisited pivotal moments from the original campaign while crafting the animated series.

O’Brien stated that Vax’s death became a crucial plot point, symbolizing a major turning point for the characters. He described it as “one of those things that was a pole in the sand”, as the team recognized it would lead the story into a darker and more emotionally charged final chapter.

Laura Bailey also expressed that the moment was challenging for everyone involved. Discussing the show’s future, she acknowledged the pain of the loss but suggested it could make the upcoming season even more impactful.

“Yeah, it’s devastating, but I think it’s gonna be extra special for season 5. I feel like it was very sad. There may or may not have been a lot of tears happening.”

O’Brien added that the cast aimed to evoke the same emotions that fans felt during the original Critical Role campaign. He emphasized their desire for viewers to experience the love, sadness, and heartbreak that surrounded Vax’s original narrative.

The transition from the tabletop campaign to the animated series also altered the context of Vax’s death. In the original story, Vax’s fate was intertwined with other significant events, including Vex’s own near-death experience. The show modified some details while preserving the emotional weight of the moment.

As season 5 approaches, the narrative will delve into how Vox Machina copes without Vax. His sister Vex will likely grapple with the loss of her brother, while Keyleth will also face the challenge of losing someone deeply significant to her.

Nonetheless, Vax’s connection to the Matron of Ravens may provide the team with a potential avenue for recovery. Given that he became her champion, there might still be a chance for Vox Machina to find a way to resurrect him.

With The Whispered One still posing a threat to the world and the team confronting their most significant emotional hurdle yet, season 5 is poised to be one of the most crucial chapters in ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’s’ saga.
