DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation are set to bring one of Batman’s latest comic adaptations to life. The companies have confirmed that an animated series based on Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s acclaimed comic book ‘Absolute Batman’ is currently in development.

This exciting announcement was made during a joint presentation at the Annecy International Film Festival, where Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register shared new insights about the project. DC Studios co-chairmen and CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran also took the stage to discuss the future of DC animation.

Snyder, the creator of the comic series, will play a significant role in the adaptation, serving as executive producer and showrunner, while Dragotta will join as a producer. Their involvement ensures that the creative minds behind the original comic maintain a direct connection to the animated series.

‘Absolute Batman’ presents a fresh perspective on the iconic superhero. Rather than depicting Bruce Wayne as a wealthy crime fighter, this story portrays Batman as a working-class hero confronting a much harsher reality. The series delves into a version of the Dark Knight battling against corruption, formidable foes, and a world where doing what’s right is increasingly challenging.

According to the series description, ‘Absolute Batman’ aims to demonstrate that “even in an era of wealth, power and corruption, one good person can change the world.”

Launched in 2024, the comic quickly became one of DC’s most significant recent successes, reportedly selling over six million copies, with its first collected volume reaching its 11th printing. The comic’s popularity made it a natural choice for adaptation into animation.

The announcement of ‘Absolute Batman’ was just one of several major reveals from DC and Warner Bros. Animation at Annecy. The companies also unveiled new projects, including the adult animated series ‘Joker: Laugh Riot’ and a children’s series centered around Superman’s beloved dog, Krypto.

‘Joker: Laugh Riot’ will explore a different facet of Batman’s greatest adversary. The narrative kicks off after Batman’s demise, prompting the Joker to navigate Gotham’s criminal underworld to uncover the truth behind his rival’s death. However, this journey leads him to unexpected revelations about his own identity without Batman.

The series will be executive produced by Jim Krieg and directed by Yasuhuro Aoki, known for his work on projects like ‘ChaO’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.’

Additionally, DC announced plans for an untitled Krypto project, which will follow Superman’s loyal dog as he interacts with a group of struggling criminals. Executive produced by C.H. Greenblatt, this animated series will focus on Krypto’s efforts to positively influence those around him, even when they resist his help.

The Annecy presentation also featured updates and sneak peeks for several other DC animated projects, including upcoming seasons of ‘Creature Commandos,’ ‘Batman: Caped Crusader,’ ‘My Adventures with Superman,’ ‘Mister Miracle,’ ‘DC Super Powers,’ and ‘Starfire.’

With ‘Absolute Batman’ now in the works, DC continues to broaden its animated universe with innovative stories and fresh interpretations of its most beloved characters. Fans of the comic will be eagerly watching to see how Snyder and Dragotta’s distinctive portrayal of the Dark Knight is adapted for the screen.
