Netflix Adapts Alix E. Harrow’s The Everlasting Into a Major Fantasy Series

Netflix is once again expanding its fantasy lineup, and its latest project has the potential to become one of its most significant genre shows. The streaming giant has secured the rights to adapt Alix E. Harrow’s bestselling fantasy novel ‘The Everlasting’ into a television series.

As reported by Variety, Netflix won the rights following a competitive bidding war and is now in the development phase for the platform. While many specifics remain under wraps, the streamer has enlisted Daphne Ferraro, known for her work on ‘Maxton Hall’, to write the series. The production team will also include Harrow and Ferraro, among others.

Currently, a release date, filming schedule, and casting details have yet to be revealed. However, the project is already generating buzz due to the original book’s popularity and its intriguing blend of fantasy, history, and time travel.

‘The Everlasting’ follows Sir Una Everlasting, a legendary hero who became one of the most celebrated figures in her kingdom’s lore. Over time, her true story has been obscured, replaced by songs, books, and myths that only capture fragments of her identity.

Centuries later, Owen Mallory, a struggling scholar and former soldier, becomes captivated by Una’s legend. His quest for the truth propels him on a journey that transcends old records and forgotten tales. According to the official description shared by Variety, “Una and Owen are tangled together in time, bound to retell the same story over and over again, no matter what it costs.”

The narrative explores how altering the past may be the only path to a different future. However, rewriting history comes with perilous consequences, and their connection across time could alter everything.

Choosing to adapt ‘The Everlasting’ as a television series rather than a film could benefit Netflix. The book spans around 400 pages, offering a rich world, well-developed characters, and emotional depth that would be challenging to condense into a two-hour movie.

A series format provides ample opportunity to delve into Una and Owen’s relationship, the historical context surrounding them, and the broader conflicts within the story.
