Elliot Page’s Role in ‘The Odyssey’ Accidentally Revealed
Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has remained one of the most secretive productions in recent memory. Since its announcement in December 2024, fans have been kept in suspense, with Nolan revealing just enough to maintain the buzz online.
The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, featuring confirmed roles for Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and Tom Holland. However, the identities of some cast members, including Elliot Page, have sparked considerable speculation leading up to the film’s press screenings.
Elliot Page has been a focal point of discussion regarding the cast. Initially confirmed in early 2025, theories about his role ranged from him portraying Achilles, the famed Greek warrior, to the character Elpenor, a minor yet pivotal crew member of Odysseus who meets an untimely end.
However, both theories have been debunked. According to a report from IGN Hungary, Page will not be playing Achilles but will take on the role of Sinon, a Greek soldier in Odysseus’ fleet.
This confirmation emerged from the Hungarian voice cast list provided by Universal’s non-U.S. distributor. Sinon is Odysseus’ cousin and plays a crucial role in convincing the Trojans to bring the wooden horse into their city by pretending to be abandoned by the Greeks.
Interestingly, Sinon is not a character from Homer’s original epic. Instead, his story is detailed in Virgil’s Aeneid and other later accounts, portraying him as a cunning Greek who deceives the Trojans into accepting the Trojan Horse.
Nolan’s choice to include Sinon indicates a creative approach that draws from a wider range of classical sources rather than adhering strictly to a single narrative.
For Page, this role marks a significant shift from what many anticipated. Sinon is not the archetypal warrior; he is a strategist and deceiver, whose contribution to the Greek cause lies in his ability to appear vulnerable while executing a plan that could topple an empire. This complexity requires an actor capable of conveying both fragility and menace, making Page’s casting increasingly compelling.
Page and Nolan share a history that adds depth to this collaboration. The actor previously worked with the director on ‘Inception’ over fifteen years ago and expressed his excitement about reuniting for ‘The Odyssey’ at New York City Comic Con. “I was thrilled to be considered for ‘The Odyssey’ and to return to work with him,” Page shared with Variety. “Working on ‘Inception’ was a joy, and I was just completely excited to meet Chris again and discuss the role, then read the script. It was a wonderful experience.”
Page also mentioned how their personal growth influenced their enthusiasm for the project. “Coming back now, being more comfortable with myself makes these projects even more enjoyable,” Page noted, reflecting on the significance of the experience.
The revelation of Page’s role as Sinon provides a clearer understanding of the expansive vision Nolan has for this adaptation. The cast list includes a variety of supporting characters, such as James Remar as the blind prophet Tiresias, Himesh Patel as Odysseus’ brother-in-law Eurylochus, Mia Goth as the treacherous maidservant Melantho, and Corey Hawkins as the wealthy Egyptian Polybus, alongside Travis Scott as a bard and Bill Irwin voicing the Cyclops.
Filming took place across multiple stunning locations, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Western Sahara, and Malta, as well as at the Universal Studios Lot in Los Angeles. With an estimated budget of $250 million, ‘The Odyssey’ stands as one of the most expensive projects of Nolan’s career and the first to be filmed entirely using IMAX 70mm cameras. The film is set to hit theaters on July 17.
