Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser Discuss Chad Feehan’s Exit from ‘Dutton Ranch’
Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have finally spoken out regarding the behind-the-scenes shift involving ‘Dutton Ranch’ creator Chad Feehan. After the show’s renewal for Season 2, the stars of ‘Yellowstone’ shared their insights on Feehan’s departure, noting that changes behind the camera are quite common in the entertainment industry.
‘Dutton Ranch’ serves as a continuation of the ‘Yellowstone’ universe, bringing back beloved characters Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler after the original series concluded. The new show follows the couple as they attempt to build a new life in Texas after leaving Montana. What started as a fresh beginning quickly became complex, but fans have responded enthusiastically to their ongoing story.
The series has already achieved significant success for Paramount+. Reports indicate that ‘Dutton Ranch’ delivered the biggest debut for the streaming service, demonstrating that interest in Taylor Sheridan’s Western franchise remains robust. However, the show encountered controversy even before its premiere when Chad Feehan, initially hired as creator and showrunner, was removed from the project.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter following the Season 2 renewal, Reilly and Hauser shared their perspectives on the situation. Both actors also serve as producers on the series, which gives them a deeper connection to the production process.
Hauser remarked that leadership changes are frequent in Hollywood and that productions must adapt when circumstances evolve.
“Showrunners change all the time. This business is about adapting. We’ve been doing this for a long time. Things change. People move on,” Hauser stated.
Reilly also reflected on the experience of creating the first season and commended the effort that went into bringing the series to fruition. She noted that the team completed the season with Feehan still involved, and the creative process was a collaborative effort.
“We finished [Season 1] with Chad beautifully. We finished this season together. It was a really difficult but really satisfying show to make. And so was ‘Yellowstone’. So is anything worth making. We’re all creative minds and we all work together and I’m so proud of that. But if we get a Season 2, we don’t make those decisions,” Reilly said.

The actors did not disclose specific reasons for Feehan’s removal from the series. Previous reports suggested that Taylor Sheridan, Reilly, Hauser, and executives from 101 Studios and Paramount were dissatisfied with certain aspects of the production process, leading to this decision.
Feehan has not publicly commented on his exit, and no replacement has been announced for the second season. Since the first season had already completed filming before his departure became public, his creative influence can still be observed throughout the episodes.
The upcoming second season will mark the first time the series progresses without Feehan’s direct involvement, which has sparked curiosity among fans. Viewers are eager to see whether the show’s direction will shift or if it will continue in the same vein that made the first season a success.
With the ‘Yellowstone’ franchise continuing to expand through shows like ‘Dutton Ranch’ and ‘Marshals’, the future looks busy for Taylor Sheridan’s television universe. While a release date for ‘Dutton Ranch’ Season 2 has yet to be announced, the strong reception to the first season indicates that expectations will be high when Beth and Rip make their return.
