Russo Brothers Developing Surprise Third ‘Avengers’ Film Beyond ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’
Recent reports indicate that the Russo Brothers are in the process of developing an additional Avengers film, which would follow the already announced ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.
According to industry source Alex Perez, this potential project might be integrated into a larger two-part narrative or stand as a separate entry within the Multiverse Saga, although Marvel Studios has yet to provide any official confirmation.
Perez elaborated that recent insights and comments from those involved in the development suggest that another Avengers project is currently under consideration. He mentioned that it could either serve as a continuation of ‘Secret Wars’ divided into multiple segments or act as a standalone Avengers film following the existing lineup.
The Russo Brothers, Anthony and Joe Russo, are already set to direct ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which is anticipated to be a significant crossover event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This film is produced by Marvel Studios and AGBO and will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is positioned as a sequel to ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and marks the 39th film in the MCU.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ features a large ensemble cast, including Robert Downey Jr. portraying Doctor Doom. The narrative is said to involve various superhero factions, including the Avengers, Wakandans, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men, all coming together from different universes to face Doom.
Originally, the MCU’s next major saga was centered around two films, ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, which were announced in 2022 as the intended conclusion of Phase Six. However, the storyline’s trajectory shifted due to various production changes. The Kang-focused narrative was revised following alterations in creative leadership and casting decisions, prompting Marvel Studios to reevaluate its long-term plans.
In 2024, Marvel officially confirmed the Russo Brothers’ return to direct ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, with writer Stephen McFeely collaborating on the script. Additionally, Robert Downey Jr. was announced to reprise a new role as Doctor Doom, indicating a significant shift in the franchise’s direction.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is slated for release on December 18, while ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is scheduled for December 17, 2027. Both films are expected to further the multiverse storyline and unite characters from across Marvel’s cinematic history, including legacy franchises from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men universe.
Production for ‘Secret Wars’ is anticipated to commence in mid-2026 at Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom and will likely span several months. However, with the emergence of reports regarding an additional Avengers project, the structure of the final phase may be broader than initially revealed.
As of now, Marvel Studios has not confirmed any third Avengers film beyond ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’, and all details remain based on insights from sources like Alex Perez and related industry reports.
