Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Expected to Open with Massive Box Office Numbers
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film is poised to become one of the most significant cinematic events of 2026. Early box office tracking from Deadline indicates that ‘The Odyssey’ is projected to debut with earnings between $80 million and $100 million in North America when it hits theaters on July 17. This initial estimate reflects the high level of anticipation surrounding Nolan’s latest project.
The film has already made waves by selling out 70mm IMAX screenings and premium format tickets nearly a year ahead of its release.
These early ticket sales have taken many by surprise and indicate a strong desire among audiences to experience the film in the largest formats available. ‘The Odyssey’ will also enjoy a three-week exclusive run in IMAX theaters, further enhancing its prospects during the opening weeks.
Despite the promising presales, Deadline cautions that forecasting a Christopher Nolan opening weekend can be challenging. His previous film, ‘Oppenheimer’, was initially expected to earn between $40 million and $50 million in its first weekend.
However, it exceeded expectations by opening to $82.4 million and went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of 2023. While some attributed its success to the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, ‘The Odyssey’ will have the advantage of being the sole major studio release that weekend.
The film boasts one of the largest ensembles Nolan has ever gathered, featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal. This impressive cast has only heightened the excitement surrounding the film.
As reported by Deadline, early audience tracking looks very promising. The film is particularly resonating with men over 25, slightly outperforming where ‘Oppenheimer’ was at the same point before its release. Overall audience interest is also ahead of ‘Oppenheimer’ and comparable to ‘Project Hail Mary’, another highly anticipated release.
If ‘The Odyssey’ achieves the higher end of its projected opening, it could mark one of the most successful opening weekends of Nolan’s career. His current domestic opening records are held by ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ with $160.9 million and ‘The Dark Knight’ with $158.4 million. ‘Oppenheimer’ also ranks among his top openings.
Strong openings are not the only reason Nolan’s films thrive. Many of his movies continue to draw audiences for weeks after their release. ‘Oppenheimer’ concluded with over $330 million in North America after its $82.4 million opening. Similarly, ‘Inception’ earned nearly five times its opening weekend total throughout its theatrical run.
Industry analysts predict that this summer could be one of the strongest in recent years. Deadline reports that the combination of ‘The Odyssey’ and Sony and Marvel Studios’ ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which premieres two weeks later, could propel the North American summer box office to approximately $4.2 billion. If this occurs, it would mark the most successful summer movie season since 2019.
For now, ‘The Odyssey’ stands as one of the most eagerly awaited releases of the year. While its final opening weekend remains to be seen, the early figures reported by Deadline suggest that Christopher Nolan may be on the brink of another significant box office triumph.
