‘Michael’ Becomes the Highest-Grossing Music Biopic of All Time
‘Michael’ has achieved a significant box office milestone, officially becoming one of the biggest music biopics ever produced. According to Deadline, the film has surpassed $911.9 million globally during its eighth weekend in theaters, making it the highest-grossing music biopic in history, overtaking 2018’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, which previously held the record with $911.03 million.
The film chronicles the life of Michael Jackson, featuring Jaafar Jackson, the real-life nephew of the music legend, in the lead role. Despite facing criticism regarding its portrayal of certain aspects of Jackson’s life, particularly its decision to downplay allegations of child sexual abuse, the film has resonated with audiences worldwide, resulting in massive commercial success.
The report notes that ‘Michael’ has also become the second highest-grossing film of 2026 so far, trailing only ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’. It has set new records for its production team, becoming the highest-grossing film ever released by Lionsgate, surpassing ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’. Director Antoine Fuqua has achieved his biggest box office success to date, eclipsing his previous record with ‘King Arthur’ from 2004.
The biopic’s impressive global performance places it in an exclusive category of music-themed films that have crossed significant financial milestones. Only ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘Michael’ have ever exceeded $300 million worldwide in the music biopic genre. Other notable films like ‘Elvis’ (2022), which earned $288.7 million, and ‘Straight Outta Compton’ (2015), with $201.6 million, remain below that threshold.

Industry reports suggest that ‘Michael’ still has potential for further international growth. The film recently premiered in Japan on June 12, and its global rollout is not yet complete. Analysts believe it may become the first music biopic to surpass $1 billion worldwide.
Achieving this milestone would mark it as one of the biggest cultural hits of the decade, making it the second film of 2026 to cross $1 billion, following ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’. Additionally, it would rank among the highest-grossing biopics of all time, surpassing even Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ from 2023.
The financial success is particularly remarkable given the film’s reported production budget of approximately $155 to $200 million. By standard box office metrics, where a film typically needs to earn about two and a half times its budget to break even, ‘Michael’ appears to have exceeded that threshold significantly. Reports indicate that Lionsgate financed a substantial portion of the costs through international pre-sales, suggesting the film’s profitability may be even greater than standard box office calculations imply.
At this stage, it remains uncertain whether any upcoming music biopic will be able to match its performance. Several projects are in the works, including films about Joni Mitchell, Jon Bon Jovi, and Dionne Warwick. However, none currently seem positioned to achieve the same level of global appeal.
One potential future competitor could be Sam Mendes’ planned Beatles project, which will consist of four separate films released together in 2028, each focusing on a different member of the band. However, even with the immense popularity of The Beatles, dividing the story into four releases could dilute audience interest rather than consolidate it into a single box office powerhouse.
