Some nights in Hollywood seem to align perfectly, where the red carpet, stage, and box office results tell a unified story. Sunday, June 28 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles was one of those nights for the cast of ‘Michael,’ the Antoine Fuqua-directed biopic that has emerged as one of the year’s most remarkable commercial successes.

Jaafar Jackson and Nia Long made a stunning entrance together on the red carpet at the BET Awards, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Jaafar sported a navy outfit while Nia dazzled in a silk brown dress. The two co-stars, who portray nephew and aunt in real life and son and mother on screen, quickly captured attention as representatives of a film that has been rewriting box office records week after week since its debut.

On the same day as the awards ceremony, ‘Michael’ officially surpassed Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time, amassing $977 million globally, as reported by Variety. The timing felt almost scripted. The film had also outperformed ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to claim the title of the biggest musical biopic ever produced, with the Lionsgate and Universal co-production setting records across various markets.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, ‘Michael’ chronicles the artist’s journey from the Jackson 5 to his reign as the King of Pop. Jaafar Jackson, the singer’s real-life nephew, makes his acting debut portraying Michael Jackson, alongside Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Nia Long as Katherine Jackson. While the film has faced criticism for not addressing the child sexual abuse allegations against Michael Jackson, its commercial success is undeniable.

At the BET Awards, Jaafar Jackson and Nia Long took the stage to present the first award of the evening, receiving a warm round of applause as they represented the film’s cast. Before announcing the winner, they took a moment to connect with the audience.

Jaafar expressed gratitude, stating, “We’re so grateful for the love you all showed to our movie. You guys have the theaters packed. We’re truly so humbled. Your support means the world to the Jackson family.” This heartfelt moment resonated deeply, especially given the film’s record-breaking global gross announced just hours earlier.

Long followed with a tribute that highlighted the emotional significance of portraying Katherine Jackson. Speaking to Deadline, she remarked, “Portraying Katherine Jackson reminded me that grace is quiet and still, and tonight we honor that. Jaafar, it was an honor watching you transform into your uncle right before our eyes.” This poignant line became one of the evening’s most memorable moments.

Long’s affection for Jaafar Jackson has been evident since the film’s release, and their red carpet appearance only reinforced that sentiment. Speaking to PEOPLE magazine at the event, Long shared her experience of watching Jaafar embody his uncle on set, saying, “I met Michael, so I’m watching him in the scenes and I’m like, I don’t want to say anything ’cause you don’t want to throw off your fellow actor, but I’m blown away.” She added, “That’s my baby for life. He has another mama whether he likes it or not.”

The duo presented the Best Male R&B / Pop Artist award, which went to Leon Thomas. Their joint appearance was among several highlights of a night that also featured Janet Jackson presenting the Icon of the Year award to Teyana Taylor and comedian Druski making his debut as host.

The journey to this milestone was not without its challenges. Lionsgate had to conduct $50 million in reshoots after the Jackson estate raised concerns about a critical plot point, adding significant costs and delays to the production. That the film emerged from these hurdles to become the most commercially successful biopic in cinema history is a narrative that seems almost scripted.

With ‘Michael’ still showing in theaters and audience enthusiasm remaining high, discussions about a potential sequel are already circulating in the industry. For one night, however, the focus was on celebrating the achievements made so far, with the King of Pop’s family present to share in the moment.
