The quest for the next ‘James Bond’ is progressing, but a seasoned casting director emphasizes that the role demands more than just fame or popularity.

Debbie McWilliams, who has been the casting director for the last three eras of ‘James Bond’, revealed what she believes producers should prioritize in the next actor to portray the iconic spy. In an interview with The Independent, McWilliams stated that the next Bond should not be an obvious choice and should maintain an air of mystery.

Having worked on Bond films from ‘For Your Eyes Only’ to ‘No Time to Die’, McWilliams dedicated around 40 years to shaping the franchise before her retirement. She asserts that the most crucial quality for the next 007 is that the actor remains relatively unknown, allowing audiences to fully immerse themselves in the character. She described Bond as needing to be “a total enigma.”

“We want to know as little about them personally as possible, because that’s what spies are. We don’t need to know where he goes shopping or who his parents are, or where he lives. We never want to see him at home,” McWilliams told The Independent.

For McWilliams, the character’s profession is just as vital as his personality. She believes that audiences must fully accept Bond as someone capable of undertaking perilous missions.

“And a vital element of the whole thing is his job description. He’s licensed to kill, and we have to believe that he can do that. If you don’t, then you’ve lost the audience,” she explained.

These insights come as the search for Daniel Craig’s successor continues. Deadline previously reported that producers and director Denis Villeneuve have begun reaching out to actors who will advance to the next round of auditions later this summer.

While no official list of finalists has been released, several names have surfaced in discussions among fans and media, including Callum Turner, Harris Dickinson, and Jacob Elordi. However, McWilliams hinted that the eventual selection might be someone less anticipated.

She believes that the best casting choices for Bond often arise when producers look beyond the most famous names. This approach was instrumental in discovering Daniel Craig, whose casting was based on more than just his prior film roles.

According to Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye, the current Bond casting director Nina Gold seems to share a similar perspective. Reports indicate that the search has focused significantly on actors with strong theater backgrounds rather than solely established movie stars.

Bamigboye noted that Barbara Broccoli, who previously oversaw the franchise, was impressed by Craig’s performances in projects like ‘Layer Cake’ and his stage work in London theaters.

Several theater actors have reportedly caught attention during the ongoing search. Among those mentioned are David Shields, who received acclaim for his role in James Graham’s play ‘Punch’, and Luke Thompson, recognized for ‘Bridgerton’ but also celebrated for his stage performances.

Thompson has starred in significant theater productions, including Ivo van Hove’s adaptation of ‘A Little Life’, and is expected to feature in the stage version of ‘The Lives of Others’ alongside Keira Knightley and Stephen Dillane.

The final decision will reportedly involve Bond producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, along with Denis Villeneuve and executives at Amazon MGM.

As fans continue to debate who should take on the mantle of the next 007, McWilliams believes the key is not to select the most famous actor. For her, the next Bond must embody mystery, confidence, and the ability to convince audiences that he truly is a spy.
