It’s one thing for a prestigious fantasy series to spark conversation, but it’s another for it to dominate the global internet on a Sunday night, leaving viewers buzzing about a single actor’s performance. ‘House of the Dragon’ has consistently achieved this throughout its third season, and the second episode may have taken that momentum to unprecedented heights.

The series made its return in June with a season that critics are calling the most confident and engaging yet. Currently, the third season boasts a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 65 reviews, with the site’s critical consensus praising it as a “reinvigorated and riveting” season that meets the high expectations set by its predecessor.

The premiere alone achieved a near-record IMDb score for the franchise, and by the time Episode 2 aired on June 28, it was evident that the show had shifted into a new gear entirely.

Episode 2, titled “Queen’s Landing,” sent social media into a frenzy. A widely shared screenshot from June 29 revealed that the episode ranked as the second most trending topic globally on X, alongside hashtags related to Rhaenyra, Alicent, and Daemon.

Also trending at that moment were the characters Otto Hightower and Emma D’Arcy, who portrays Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. The episode received a remarkable 9.3 out of 10 on IMDb from users, placing it among the highest-rated episodes in the series’ history.

The emotional core of the episode centers on Rhaenyra’s response to her son Jacaerys’s death, leading to her long-awaited return to King’s Landing and her first act as queen—executing Otto Hightower.

Much of the discussion following the episode has focused on D’Arcy’s performance, particularly in the opening minutes and the scene before the Iron Throne. One review highlighted how D’Arcy conveys profound emotional depth through facial expressions alone, with bloodied and shaky steps after the execution reflecting a grief and vulnerability that pierce through the facade of queenship.

D’Arcy themselves shared insights with Variety, stating, “I wanted Rhaenyra to be stripped of her adulthood by the time she reaches the throne. She finds herself in this position where she’s required to execute her father’s former best friend. When someone has known you from your childhood, I think it’s very hard to retain the jacket of your adult self.” This characterization encapsulates the show’s core theme: the burdens of power on those unprepared to wield it.

Otto Hightower, portrayed by Rhys Ifans, has been a constant presence since the series’ inception. His execution at Rhaenyra’s hands, executed with a borrowed sword and a faltering first attempt, marks a pivotal narrative moment that reshapes the future of the series.

Den of Geek remarked that this episode contains some of the most significant moments in the entire series, with Jace’s farewell, Aemond’s conquest of Harrenhal, and Otto’s death all occurring within a single runtime, reflecting the show’s increasingly relentless pace.

Not every opinion has been entirely positive. Some critics have pointed out dialogue choices and the uneven handling of certain subplots as ongoing issues, and the episode’s audience score on Rotten Tomatoes indicates a fanbase that remains divided. However, the global conversation that erupted after the episode aired speaks volumes. When a television show trends worldwide and its lead actor trends separately alongside a character who just lost their head, it’s clear that something is resonating.

The season comprises eight episodes and is set to conclude in August, ensuring that the ‘House of the Dragon’ discourse is far from over. If Episode 2 sets the standard for character development, the upcoming episodes will have an exceptionally high bar to meet.
