Steve Toussaint Reveals Corlys’ Doubts About Rhaenyra in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3
‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 has taken Lord Corlys Velaryon through yet another challenging chapter. Actor Steve Toussaint shared in an interview with Gold Derby that Corlys will start to question both his involvement in the war and his loyalty to Queen Rhaenyra as the season progresses.
For years, Corlys has supported Rhaenyra’s claim to the Iron Throne, but the toll of that decision is becoming increasingly heavy. After enduring the loss of family members, his home, and much of what he dedicated his life to, the legendary Sea Snake is beginning to wonder if his sacrifices for Rhaenyra have been worthwhile.
In his conversation with Gold Derby, Toussaint explained that Corlys is reaching a critical juncture where he must carefully consider his next steps. “Since she became the declared heir to the throne, it’s always been a complicated relationship. Much as he really believes in her claim, he thinks there’s something about her that draws catastrophe and damage.”
Toussaint highlighted the immense personal losses Corlys has faced during the conflict. His son died after marrying Rhaenyra, and he also lost his daughter due to the Targaryen family’s actions. Although Corlys still believes Rhaenyra is the rightful heir, he can no longer overlook the chaos surrounding her.
“While he acknowledges her claim and the fact that she is, on the whole, trying to do the right thing, he feels he’d be better off further and further away from her. Later on, he has to assess the sacrifice that he feels he has made for her cause, and the lack of return for it. And that does cause him to reassess where he is at, and what his role should be in this whole conflict.”
The interview also delved into Corlys’ emotional journey following the loss of his wife, Rhaenys. Toussaint believes the character has come to realize that family holds more significance than wealth or power. After witnessing the destruction of his castle and the loss of much of his fortune, Corlys understands that the people around him are what truly matter.
He noted that Corlys once equated material success with everything, but that perspective has shifted. “Your wealth is in your family and the people whose lives you affect.”
Another significant topic from the interview was the controversial kiss between Alicent Hightower and her son Aemond in the Season 3 premiere. The scene shocked many viewers and quickly became a hot topic online. Toussaint admitted he was taken aback by the moment as well. “Well, I found it shocking.”

He acknowledged that unusual family dynamics are common in the world of ‘House of the Dragon’, but still described the scene as peculiar. “I guess it’s par for the course with this particular set of people that a son might do that to his mother. It’s, you know, weird.”
Despite all the shocking moments this season has presented, Toussaint believes Corlys’ personal struggles remain one of the show’s most compelling narratives. The once-assured lord is starting to question everything he has fought for, and his relationship with Rhaenyra seems to be approaching a pivotal moment.
Corlys is entering a new phase of his journey. While he continues to support Rhaenyra’s right to rule, the escalating costs of war may compel him to reconsider where his true loyalties lie before the battle for the Iron Throne concludes.
