Emma D’Arcy Reveals Rhaenyra’s Dangerous Transformation in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3
Rhaenyra Targaryen has dedicated years to her quest for the Iron Throne, but Emma D’Arcy warns that this relentless pursuit is starting to alter her in perilous ways.
In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the star of ‘House of the Dragon’ discussed Rhaenyra’s emotional evolution in Season 3, particularly following the heartbreaking death of her son, Jacaerys Velaryon. D’Arcy noted that this loss drives Rhaenyra into a darker mindset, reshaping her perspective on her quest for the crown.
The passing of Jace marks one of the most harrowing experiences Rhaenyra has endured. Upon witnessing his lifeless body, she grapples with the reality of her loss, breaking down as she repeatedly calls out his name, unable to accept that he is truly gone. D’Arcy shared that filming this scene was one of the most challenging moments of the season.
“I very rarely dread scenes. Often in our job, ironically, the larger the emotional scale, the more fun, the more engaging, the more there is to do,” D’Arcy revealed to Entertainment Weekly. “That was the one that I dreaded this season and was pretty grim actually on the day.”
For D’Arcy, Rhaenyra’s grief extends beyond the loss of her son. Jace was one of the few individuals who alleviated her loneliness after years of battling those who doubted her right to rule.
“Rhaenyra requires companionship in a really profound way,” D’Arcy explained. “There is a very beautiful revelation that happens for her when she has children, in discovering, actually, that companionship can be in a mother-child relationship. That’s epitomized by her relationship with Jace.”
The bond between Rhaenyra and Jace was strong enough to fill the void of loneliness she had carried for years, making his death almost unbearable for her.
This emotional turmoil quickly leads to a significant political maneuver. Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen make their way to King’s Landing to seize control of the capital. However, her arrival is not marked by a heroic triumph but rather a complex moment filled with violence and tough decisions.
One such decision arises when Daemon finds Otto Hightower, Alicent’s father, imprisoned in the Red Keep. With Aegon and Aemond missing, Otto becomes the scapegoat. Rhaenyra takes matters into her own hands, personally executing him before claiming her place on the Iron Throne.

Matt Smith, who portrays Daemon, emphasized that this moment signifies a major turning point for Rhaenyra.
“It’s a real statement,” Smith explained, noting that killing Otto was not merely an act of violence but a declaration of the side Rhaenyra has chosen. Looking ahead, D’Arcy hinted that Rhaenyra’s conviction in her mission will intensify. She may start to perceive her struggle as something transcending politics. “There is a growing belief that hers is a holy war, that she has a divine mandate to rule, and that any action she takes in pursuit of that aim has godly backing,” D’Arcy stated.
The actor believes this mindset could pose one of Rhaenyra’s greatest threats, as it eliminates doubt and complicates the possibility of compromise.
“It disables more nuanced conversation,” D’Arcy explained. “I do think that increasingly extreme position is one of the tinderboxes that now sits in season 3.”
As the battle for Westeros rages on, Rhaenyra may finally attain the crown she has long desired. However, Season 3 suggests that the price of wearing it could transform her in ways she never anticipated.
