‘House of Cards’ Star Kevin Spacey Discusses His Hollywood Comeback Plans
Kevin Spacey expresses that he feels a gradual return to Hollywood after enduring years of legal struggles, public backlash, and losing significant acting roles due to multiple sexual misconduct allegations.
The Oscar-winning actor shared insights about his career and future during an appearance on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast. Spacey believes the narrative surrounding him is shifting, with people becoming more receptive to his perspective.
“I feel much more welcomed, and I think that things are moving in the direction that we hoped they were moving in,” Spacey told Maher.
During their discussion, Spacey highlighted his recent legal victories, noting that he has won every jury trial he faced. He specifically referenced the civil lawsuit from actor Anthony Rapp, who accused Spacey of assaulting him as a teenager. A New York jury ultimately found Spacey not liable in that case.
Spacey also confronted the broader allegations that have tarnished his reputation and career. While he denied many of the accusations, he acknowledged that some of his past actions crossed boundaries.
“I never said there was no fire,” Spacey remarked. “It just wasn’t a raging forest fire. It was a small kitchen fire that could have been put out with an extinguisher.” He also admitted to having behaved inappropriately, stating, “I hit on a lot of guys.”
Maher, while showing sympathy during parts of the conversation, expressed that he believed Spacey should have faced consequences. The comedian noted that he wasn’t an expert on every detail of the accusations but felt the volume of claims made the situation serious. “There’s too much smoke to be no fire,” Maher stated.
In response, Spacey argued that he has already faced significant repercussions, likening his experience to a lengthy suspension in sports, suggesting he has spent years managing the fallout.
“I feel less in jail than I did,” Spacey noted. “When people actually start to hear the facts, understand what we won in courts, I think people now look at this and think, maybe nine years has been enough.”
The controversy resulted in significant changes to Spacey’s career. He was removed from Netflix’s political drama ‘House of Cards’ and replaced by Christopher Plummer in the film ‘All the Money in the World’. For several years, Spacey struggled to secure major Hollywood roles, primarily appearing in smaller independent projects and international films.
In the interview, Spacey also discussed his sexuality and the choice to come out as gay in 2017, admitting he had kept that aspect of his life private for many years.
“I was fiercely closeted… I thought I was so clever that nobody knew, but of course kind of everybody knew,” Spacey shared.
Maher questioned why Spacey had concealed his sexuality for so long, pointing out that being openly gay has become more accepted in the entertainment industry.
Spacey’s remarks come as he seeks to rebuild his career and public image. While he feels more welcomed, his return to the industry remains a complex issue, with audiences and Hollywood figures continuing to debate his place in entertainment.
